Anyone watch Break Point on Netflix? It’s nice to see “behind the scenes” and see a bit of the players lives off court.
Can’t necessarily say I’m a huge fan of Kyrgios and most of the first ep is focused on him. I think he’s talented but lazy and I don’t appreciate his shitty behaviour on court.
It’s been nice to see some players that I usually don’t see too much of during tournaments. I’ll be honest, I hadn’t really heard of Paula Badosa before but she’s definitely someone I’ll watch out for now.
Australian Open starts Monday. Can’t say I’m thrilled the Aussies decided to let Novak back into the country.

I watched the first episode over the weekend, and really enjoyed it. I liked the way that they produced the show to mean something for tennis fans, but also throw in quick explanations on things that non-tennis fans may not know. I know it's an unpopular opinion, but I like Kyrgios. He can certainly be an a-hole at times, but I like that he recognizes that in himself. He'll own how difficult he can be, and admit things like he doesn't have coach because no one could put up with him. IMO, there are a few others in the tennis world who can be just as difficult, but try to portray themselves as justified and right in anything they do. I like Nick's self-awareness. I'm also not sure that I agree with the idea that he's lazy. I think that rather he values having a balanced life not owned entirely by tennis. I can remember when the Williams sisters were also blasted for being lazy because they did not enter every tournament, but took time off to do other things. But when you look at the longevity of their careers, I think the choices are justified. A person can't be the best tennis player in the world without sacrificing everything for tennis. But a person can be a great tennis player and have a balanced life. I respect the choice for balance.

I really hadn't heard (or taken notice) of her before this and I'm wondering how I hadn't if she'd gotten to such a high ranking. She's the only one whose name didn't really register for me. I'm in between on Kyrgios, I do enjoy watching him play when he's not being over the top (it drives me crazy when he gets stuck in a loop with an umpire or something and just can't seem to stop yelling the same thing repeatedly). And I really enjoyed the Special Ks run at the AO last year, sad that they aren't getting to defend their title this year with Kyrgios pulling out. I just watched the Ons Jabeur episode and it was a really sweet portrayal, made me more of a fan of hers than I was before.

People are joking online about a Netflix curse as most of the players featured to date either had to withdraw from the Aus Open or have been bounced. Ons was the latest player to get knocked out. I thought she might make a good run! I think Felix is one of the few players from the doc remaining in the tournament.

They were planning to release 5 episodes of this before each Slam, but I have to imagine people are going to be less interested in being featured, tennis players being somewhat known for superstitions. ETA: Did anyone ever watch those little My Tennis Life clips that the Tennis Channel does? That was another notoriously cursed feature, every single time they chose someone to film, they were inevitably injured or had the worst seasons of their careers. Some people have fallen entirely off the map, like Monica Puig. And some just haven't ever really gotten back to top form, like Coco van de Weghe.
