I hear ya--all I hear is blahblahblah when they start talking about the financial side of things. I think Colorado was wise to make the first move and I hope they do well in the Pac-10. Baylor's chief cheerleader was Ann Richards, who was an alum and the only reason they made it into the Big 12 in the first place. Without her influence, they'll have a much harder row to hoe. Texas A&M has become the Horns' succubus conjoined twin, apparently. Their football program has really fallen from the heights and they haven't been that competitive of late, but OTOH, most of us former SWC fans can't imagine a world in which UT and A&M don't play for conference bragging rights on Thanksgiving weekend. Whatever happens, UT and A&M will be together, whether it benefits both or not.

Whatever happens, UT and A&M will be together, whether it benefits both or not. I guess Texas Tech has to come to according to the Texas Legislature because they want at least 3 of the 4 Texas schools in the Big 12 to stick together. The Big 10 would have loved having just Texas or even Texas and Texas A&M together because they both belong to the AAU, but there's no way they'd take Texas Tech too. So the Pac 16 deal seems like the best thing for 3 of the 4 to still remain together. However, there are so many rumors popping up now that I don't know what to truly believe until the dust settles. One minute A&M is going to the SEC without Texas. The next Texas and Texas A&M are going to the Big 10 without Texas Tech. Maryland is going to join the Big 10, so the Big 10 gets the DC market, and before the SEC starts plundering the ACC first. I do hope all of this finally leads to a playoff system in the near future; although, I do think having four megaconferences is even more unfair to the mid-majors.

I know--it's so confusing. I don't know what to believe... except I believe I'm irrationally happy about this: NCAA throws the book at USCOh, and I have a question--if Notre Dame decides to join a conference, will they have to get a papal dispensation to do so?

I don't know what to believe... except I believe I'm irrationally happy about this: NCAA throws the book at USCI was listening to sports talk radio today and different hosts/reporters kept saying that at USC, they are just in shock at the extent of the punishment handed down. But come on: the investigation took 4 years, Reggie Bush settled the lawsuit about receiving $300,000 during his days as a Trojan and Pete Carroll suspiciously bailed for the NFL earlier this year. I don't know how they thought they'd just lose a couple of scholarships and be good to go.

It gets better: 'SC stripped of 2005 Orange Bowl victory.[/color] except I believe I'm irrationally happy about this I know--it brings me such joy, too. Oh, the beautiful schadenfreude! I wonder if Bush will be stripped of the Heisman?

Colorado's chances in the Pac-10 are suddenly looking a whole lot better. At least, in 2012.

It is Mr. d's understanding that if Bush is stripped of the Heisman, the Heisman committee would vote to re-award it to the second-place finalist--which would most likely be Vince Young. *crosses fingers and toes in anticipation*

Speaking as a USC alumna, I can't say that I'm terribly surprised. I liked and followed USC football while I was a student and for a few years afterwards, but to me there was always something...hinky (?) about Pete Carroll. Well, I don't know if 'hinky' is the right word. He was a good coach and obviously charismatic, but he never seemed like someone I would like to know as a person. Like I got the feeling that he wasn't above playing dirty and breaking the rules as long as it benefited him. I'm sure that that's not unusual among coaches, but still. I guess I'm also generally mistrusting by default of people who seem overly charismatic.
In short, I appreciated what he was able to do for USC on the field, but it comes as no surprise to me that he was involved with some shady shit off the field. I liked him as a coach, but I never liked him as a person. Although, I suppose that the shady shit he pulled was in conjunction with his position as a coach, so perhaps I shouldn't like him as a coach either? LOL.
And it's a kind of relief, being able to say this out loud, haha. Back in Pete Carroll's heyday...say one bad word about the man was like committing sacrilege. I once made the mistake of telling a fellow Trojan that Pete struck me as being a little two-faced at times, and she gave me the biggest WTF look ever.
(I'll still have to root for USC though, whenever I tune in, which isn't that often.)

We've never been able to figure out why nobody in the media would ever pass up a chance to kiss Pete Carroll's butt. I can understand holding the fans in his thrall, but the media treated him like the Second Coming Of Bear Bryant. I'm sure Brent Musberger was weeping into his umpteenth Scotch over it all last night.
The latest on the Big 12 implosion: Colorado's officially gone Pac-10, Nebraska's officially gone Big-10, and the Pac-10 has issued invitations to Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State. All but A&M are set to go to the Pac-10, with official announcements coming early next week. A&M is said to be on the fence between Pac-10 and the SEC, where they would probably be trounced on a regular basis for years to come. And nobody's talking about Baylor any more--the West Coast schools have no use for Baylor, and as an anonymous source told our local paper, "Baylor's spending all their time talking up officials at Texas and Tech--they should be talking up the California schools".

Yeah, I think the media just had a complete hard-on when it came to talking about USC's DYNASTY and how PETE CARROLL WAS TEH AWESOME. Even back during the days when I was a lot more gung-ho about our college program, all the hype made me cringe. Hey, I can be a total stanning homer with the best of 'em, but eesh.
Am I being a bad Trojan if I secretly hope that Pete Carroll crashes and burns (again) in the NFL? IMO it was a dick move for him to suddenly up and leave for Seattle and leave the school to deal with his mess. Not that I'm saying he acted alone, because I'm sure he didn't, but I think it was shitty of him, although not unexpected, to bask in the fawning over-the-top glory but then cut loose as soon as he realized that the jig was up.
