On Jan. 1, the University of Missouri-Rolla becomes Missouri S&T, Missouri University of Science and Technology. (Until 1964 it was the Missouri School of Mines, hence the Miners as the name of the school's athletic teams.)

I'll be pulling for Mizzou Saturday. No offense to Sooners but I haven't liked your team since the days of Mr. Switzer.

I should probably root for the Big 12 South winner, but dammit, I just can't stand the Sooners. I don't even like their band, who damn near spoiled this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade for me by playing "Boomer Sooner" in Herald Square--blasphemers! Duke, there was a time when I thought of Barry Switzer as the Antichrist. Those were more innocent times--but I still hate the Sooners.

Count my family in on the Switzer haaaaate. Seemed like he and his crews were just bad sports, y'know? C'mon, Divasahm -- Mizzou can use all the rooters it can get.

Oooookaaaaaaayyyy... *untwists arm*Our favorite line about Switzer was that under his tenure, OU had the best college football team that money could buy. ;D

Who can remember that game where the Sooner wagon tipped over when it made its run around the field? Driver & passengers leaping for their lives. Good times!

Did anybody see the segment on Bryant Gumbel's show on HBO about the guy who donated $165 million to Oklahoma's athletic department? I'm pretty clueless outside of the Big 10 so maybe it was an old rerun, but it was incredibly annoying. I didn't give a crap about that team one way or the other before, but now I'd cheer against them just because of it. A college football program is not the same as the Yankees--you can't buy a team. I hope the NCAA is watching them like hawks.

Woo, I love that we're all throwing it down Missouri style. I too, am on the Mizzou bandwagon...FOR NOW. Usually I'm anti....it seems like all the people who went there have attitude about it and were WAY too into the Greek system for my tastes. Then when I tell them I went to SMSU, they kind of give me the stank eye. WHATEVER!

I hope the NCAA is watching them like hawks. Well presumably the money is going to the entire athletic department, so it will benefit athletes in other sports that don't receive the attention football does. But in general these type of endowments/gifts are quite common for athletic departments. The money goes to help the entire athletic department and helps athletes in a wide range of sports. For many schools there's football (and/or basketball) and everything else. These types of donations make sure athletes in soccer, gymnastics, track and field, etc. get the type of support and training they need to compete at a high level. And I don't really buy into the theory that football players are students too. I know for fact that football players are treated much much better than regular students. While I was at Michigan it was common knowledge that football players were given academic "help" the rest of us couldn't get and allowed to coast unlike the rest of us. In addition, the primetime college sports make millions upon millions of dollars for the Universities through exclusive nike or adidas contracts, coke and pepsi contracts, airtime contracts, etc. It is ridiculous universities are able to make so much money off the backs of "students" when everything they do ensure they perform is contrary to their own academic guidelines and principles.

(No offense intended to any Greeks we may have here -- you're here, so obviously you're wonderful.) I do give my nephew the stank eye when he talks about SMS, but that's because he makes fun of Mizzou. ;D
