A confession: James Spader is my favorite Hollywood "pervert." From Pretty in Pink to Secretary, trust him to turn practically any role into something slightly smarmy, slightly disturbing, and always provocative. Lately, I've really been enjoying his performace as Alan Shore on Boston Legal. Please tell me I'm not the only one!

Oh hell yes, James Spader is so my tv boyfriend, I love him so much. My love was only amplified after seeing him in Secretary and then having the most wonderful dream that night. I sound like such a fangirl, but I just love him.

Love him. He's probably the cherry on the cake that is Stargate, one of my favorite guilty pleasures. But he's best when he's malvolent, cynical and cruel; he carries it off so well, you almost root for him. Perfect example, Less Than Zero.
He's the only thing which makes Boston Legal semi-tolerable but I wish he would lose some of the weight he's gained. He has very sexy features but they're hidden behind the podge.
Those of you who think he's sexy in The Secretary (and, he definitely is), you should check out White Castle. Susan Sarandon plays the older woman that he falls for. It's a damn sensual movie. Mmm....

I don't know how he does it, but the more amoral and slick and pervy he gets, the hotter it is. I would so do him in a heartbeat.
Better still, Spader is always an absolute scream on talk shows. Whenever he's on Conan, it's a "can't miss" episode as far as I'm concerned. There was one interview he did where some studio announcer randomly broke in with "closing at five on Friday" or some other really bizarre announcement. Watching him and Conan play it off was a riot.

Mmm.... I thank you kafka.I was going to add that if they're going to have James Spader in a movie better have a sex scene or I'll be pissed.

I don't mind the weight thing much. I read somewhere it's a byproduct of him quitting smoking, so I presume it will eventually level out. I'd rather have a pudgy Spader than no Spader at all, hee!

I didn't think he could make perv much more appealing than he did in "sex, lies and videotape," but I thought he was just astonishing in "Secretary." Maggie Gyllenhaal seemed to get most of the critical praise, but I thought he was spectacular. On paper that character must have read like a psycho, but Spader made him seem real, in pain, and made me root for him to be happy! That's some seriously great fricking acting right there, imo.

I totally agree with everything you just said. But the Gyllenhaal/Secretary part of it brought back my feelings of frustration over how Spader rarely seems to get the critical praise he deserves. Or perhaps, acclaim to the degree that he deserves it. He reminds me of Philip Seymour Hoffman in the way that both are considered or expected to be solid work horses who deliver without question. And, like PSH (until this year), Spader doesn't get the acclaim that smaller, not as talented, actors get when they surprise people by actually doing some minimally decent acting. Acting that people like PSH or Spader could do in their sleep, with both hands tied behind their backs, and that would be considered nothing for them. But if a Heath Ledger pretty boy does it, then people gush all over the place. Ooops, excuse that little rant of built-up frustration and irritation. I'm cranky today.

Heh. The movie is called White Palace. Though I bet White Castle is responsible for some of the pudge. It's always on cable but I haven't managed to sit through it.
My favorite pervy Spader role is in Crash (1996). The NC-17 rated pinnacle of his hotness if I do say so myself. He looks especially toned in Supernova with Angela Bassett though I wonder WTF she's doing in what I think is straight-to-video sci-fi.
