And not to be melodramatic, but the letter writer was pregnant at one point, and the family still refused to make changes, meaning it's possible they could have killed their grandchild before it was born. There's carelessness (like accidental cross contamination, or not realizing something was fried in the wrong kind of oil) and then there's the escalation of "they never really ate mushrooms all that often until I started dating their son." They are truly terrible people.
Related to Reddit, there was an Am I the Asshole a few months ago where some girl served pork sliders to her non-religiously observant date who came from a Muslim background without telling him. She was told that he didn't eat pork, so she served him pork, and he was pissed. The internet decided she was indeed the asshole because all it should take is someone saying, I don't eat whatever, and there doesn't need to be a reason. It doesn't take much to be a decent person.
Sidebar: now I want mushroom powder.

I feel like my parents would be like this.
I was once the (accidental) asshole who served a meal someone wouldn't/couldn't eat. My ex and I had another couple over and after a few drinks I serve up dinner, which was basically gigantic steaks and a veg side or something. Pleasantries continue for a bit and eventually my ex goes, You do know Kelly is a vegetarian, right?
I guess I did know, a bit? But had completely forgotten, obviously, and felt like shit about it! We did all laugh (there at least, god knows what they said about me on the way home...).

We did all laugh (there at least, god knows what they said about me on the way home...). I think people with food allergies/ restrictions, realize that from time to time other people, especially in a home cooking situation will forget. It might be a little annoying but we get it. I have a strange food allergy- "Latex fruit allergy" most of the foods aren't things I come in to contact with on any regular basis. But some are more or less ubiquitous (avocados/ bananas/kiwis). Bananas make my mouth and throat itch and kiwis will send me into hives. I work at a job where most of us are on the road every day so we only see each other maybe once a week. My supervisor ( who I adore) goes over to the grocery store across the street and buys an avocado for lunch, cuts it in half and offers half to me. Every single time I say " I'm allergic" and he responds with "oh yea" and now it's a running joke with the team... " Do you want the other half?" Entire team responds "She's still allergic!" My mother in law loves the dumb things too, and has cut an avocado and then used that knife to cut up, say, veggies for a salad. Normally not a big deal.. I eat the salad.. 20 minutes later I'm in the floor of the bathroom praying for the sweet release of death. It's more annoying when restaurants do it. I went to a Mexican place, coworker and I both ordered the same thing, but hers had guac, and I told the server I was allergic. I was served hers... the tine on my fork grazed the guac. Spent the rest of that opiate training looking like I was dope sick. And just last night we had sushi, let the restaurant know as usual. Enjoyed my spicy tuna roll and mai tai, came home and felt "off" And within minutes I was in full reaction. Strangely- latex gloves aren't an issue, but bandaids and the latex adhesive on surgical tape give me what look and feel like burns.

My sister developed a reaction like that to avocados. Why is it called latex fruit allergy? Is there actual latex involved in these fruits?

My sister developed a reaction like that to avocados. Why is it called latex fruit allergy? Is there actual latex involved in these fruits? There's a similar protein in the fruits/veggies that's in latex. I have a reaction to some but not all of these: Avocado (yup) ,Banana (yup),Chestnut (no idea),Potato (no issues),Tomato (yup),Kiwi (yup),Pineapple (nope),Papaya (yup),Eggplant (no clue I've never eaten eggplant- my dad hated it, so we never had it growing up, and the way it looks is a turn off so I won't even try it),Melon (no issues),Passion Fruit(fine),Mango (yup),Wheat (fine),Cherimoya ( no clue what this is),Green Pepper (fine). Almost every time I have a reaction it involves various levels of stomach nonsense, but other things like the kiwis and bananas and mangos trigger other issues. It sucks, because I LOVE a lot of those things. They make my mouth happy. But they make the rest of me hulk out. They say you get a whole new immune system every 7 years... so I'll try some of these things every so often hoping I've hit the 7 year mark and I can finally eat them ( I always do it when I'm with people so if I need to call 911 there's someone there) and I have yet to be able to eat them.

To make things weirder, the exact letter (with references to mushrooms changed to “a certain food”) showed up in the Ask Amy column in my local newspaper today.

This mushroom thing is really going around. I am reading convo about it everywhere. I first read about it over a week ago and I’m still furious on the DIL’s behalf! Why are some people such unrelenting dicks?

I follow the r/relationships and AITA fan(?) accounts on Twitter. Some of the posts are sad, but the hilarious ones are SO hilarious, like the guy whose wife wants to borrow the Porsche he saved up for with his allowance money. He doesn't want to let her because she can buy her own car, but she also has a horse, and a work-provided chauffeur.

I don’t know where to put this, but because my first tiptoe into Reddit was advise columnists. (I requested updates, you guys told me: <<<Updates Right Here!>>>
Today I was Permanently Banned from Reddit. So I got that going for me. I can still read everything, I just can’t post, something I never did much of anyway.
But there’s a big red bar across the top of every page saying “Permanently Banned.”
I got banned from TWOP as well. Gee, you guys never banned me….
