Anyone else dig Laura Dern? I recently watched We Don't Live Here Anymore, and she should have been nominated for an Oscar. The same weekend I watched that movie, I was flipping channels and Rambling Rose and Citizen Ruth were both on at the same time. Three great, different performances.
Citizen Ruth is one of my favorite movies, and I can't picture anyone else playing that part .

I've always liked her, even though I haven't seen too many of her movies. What I liked about Citizen Ruth was that they didn't try to make her character noble, and she herself didn't try to insinuate any admirable characteristics.
Over-all, I didn't care for Wild at Heart but I did like her character in that. Especially when Sailor (Nicolas Cage) is singing an Elvis song and she screams ecstatically and almost swoons, like an overwrought groupie.
I also like that, as far as I can tell, she's never had work done on her nose.

dirksunboy, I dig Laura Dern. She's a walking testimony to the adage 'when one door closes another one opens': she was dumped by Billy Bob Thornton for Angelina Jolie...now she's with the delectable Ben Harper and they have two children together. And Billy Bob Thornton is....who?

But didn't she start dating Billy Bob when he was still married to his non-famous wife? (I think her name was Pietra.) Because if that's true, Laura deserved to get dumped. And Billy Bob deserves to be nowhere...like he is now!

Am I the only one who can't make it through Rambling Rose? I've given it a serious try about three times, and it's just so boring I lose interest.

I think she would have become successful even if she hadn't had some doors opened for her cause she was someone's kid. She's that talented, imo. I've heard she's very cool and took a lot of shit from Billy Bob "I'm terrified of antiques and komodo dragons" Thornton.

She has a minor role in Happy Endings and it reminded me how much I like her. Why doesn't she get more roles? She was terrific on the West Wing, too; I wish they'd kept her around for more episodes.
I know almost nothing about Ben Harper. I hope he's a nice guy. Billy Bob is gross. Maybe she was young and...drunk? All the time? And also blind.

I just watched Citizen Ruth and she is so amazingly good in that, and I got a big kick out of the movie (I love Alexander Payne!). I just love the part where she's on the ground kicking both of her feet at Swoosie Kurtz and Kelly Preston. And the part where she's acting out a fight with her boyfriend, Raul, for the shocked, do-gooder pro-lifers. ("You wanna see blood? I'll show you blood you fuckin byitch!")
And then this past weekend I saw her playing a tiny part in I am Sam and felt bad. She should be getting better roles.

I'm surprised at the love for her because I always thought she was one of the fugliest people who ever used nepotism to get into movies. She was the pre-Gwyneth Gwyneth without the pretty.
I thought she was the weakest part of Blue Velvet and I hated her in Citizen Ruth and Ramblin' Rose. I also hate her mother, Diane Ladd, too. I know - it's an illness or something. I have to go lie down.

I don't have an opinion about her either way, but if Ben loves her, she must be a good person.
Please do yourself a favor and check out his music. He's darn purty too...
