If they did have to pay a dowry (insulting, archaic tradition blah blah blah chauvenistcakes), at least they could afford it. She came from high society (Boston, I think), so it 's not like her family had to take a second mortgage on their 600 sqft Cape Cod.
Topher, I totally agree with your "aura of beauty" comment. She might not have been the most technically beautiful creature who ever lived, but something about the way she presented herself convinced you that she was the epitome of beauty and elegance.

I got curious about the pre-wedding pic everyone was talking about and googled it. Is this it? That's a nice picture anyway, even if it isn't quite the one everyone was talking about.

Grace was actually from Philadelphia, the Main Line, as the society folk like to call themselves. Her family was pretty well off - not Kennedy-rich, but nowhere near poor. I think a lot of her unhappiness came from the fact that she had a very cold and distant father. IIRC, he had been an Olympic rower, and he was one of these parents who liked to see his kids be uber-competitive when it came to sports. Grace was interested in more refined things like music and acting (and she was a girl), so she didn't quite measure up in her father's eyes.
She also had a rep in Hollywood as a randy young woman. By present day standards, she'd probably be considered completely normal, but back then, the studios kept very tight lids on their stars (or tried to, at least).

Didn't she also have an older sister that her dad said was more beautiful and graceful? Even when she became famous, she never really measured up in his eyes. At least that's what I heard. Maybe that's part of the reason why she married a prince, so she can meet daddy's expectations.
She did have that type of reputation. Everything I've read on her agreed on that point. I read that Bing Crosby wanted to marry her at one point.

GirlyGhoul -- I don't know how you managed to find it but, yes, that's the picture I was thinking of. Isn't it beautiful?

I just went to google.com, typed in "Grace Kelly Wedding" and clicked on the "Images" link and it came up. Along with some other really nice wedding pics.
I thought she just rocked as Jimmy Stewart's "Girl Friday" in RearWindow, but knew little about her beyond that. Now looking at some of the wedding pictures, I can see how the country must have gone NUTS over her back in the day. So glamourous and princess-y! ;D

We really don't have anyone like that these days. Kinda sad.

One thing that I always wonder is if her grandchildren have seen any of her movies. It is said that Ranier banned her movies in Monaco. I wonder if they are ever curious about their Hollywood Royalty grandmother. For some reason, I always wonder about that.
Beautiful, but sucked as an actress. I saw To Catch A thief and some of Dial M for Murder where I came to that conclusion. Was she better in another movie?

She did win an Oscar for "The Country Girl".

How come? And was this before or after her death?
