Miss Kelly's acting in that movie was on par with Miss Halle Berry's acting for Monster's Ball. They were both a case of a beautiful woman willing to look just pretty in ugly clothes and willing to make out with an old, ugly guy (very Hollywood that---every Producer's Dream and Reality {in Hollywood, of course}) in a SOCIALLY RELEVANT!!!! movie. Monster's Ball: - the DEATH Penalty
- INTERRacial SEX
- Suicide!
The Country Girl: - ALCOHOLISM
- PEDOPHILIA---note the age difference between Miss Kelly and Mr. Crosby
- ALCOHOLISM---Mr. William Holden was the Tempter of Miss Kelly from her marriage and her renunication of Pedophilia and he was one of Hollywood's biggest Drunks
In other words, I wouldn't put too much credence in that Oscar---I should run over to that thread and post.

I think it was also an Oscar in terms of Charlizes Theron's Oscar. You know, glamour girl goes dowdy. It was an even bigger deal back then and Grace got pretty dowdy. But I agree she was lousey in that role.

The Country Girl is difficult to watch because Grace just takes so much shit from the men in the film. I thought she was excellent in the role and did deserve the Oscar (in as much as anyone really deserves an Oscar). Although she did beat out Judy Garland for A Star is Born and Dorothy Dandridge for Carmen Jones - both films and roles that are far better known today than Kelly's performance in The Country Girl.
She is much better known these days for her style and her Hitchcock films but I think she had what it takes to be a great actress. She just never got the chance to really hone her craft.

I agree that she was absolutely gorgeous, much more so than most actresses today. But I must admit, no matter what I think of them personality-wise or of their acting skills, that women like Catherine Zeta-Jone and Charlize Theron are comparable to Grace Kelly in terms of beauty.

I agree. And dare I add... Ashley Judd? Except a few years ago, not now. My initial impression of Ashley Judd was that she had that "Grace Kelly" look that people are always on the look-out for. Then she went and put herself in insipid romantic comedies and half-assed thrillers. I've never quite understood the Grace Kelly worship, but I have to admit, she had something unique. And I love that (reportedly) she was quite the sex hound underneath that frosty exterior.

Are there any good bios about her that any of you would recommend? I don't know why but she fascinates me more than any other actress from her era.

I haven't read any just Grace Kelly bios yet, but I did read one on her and Prince Rainier. It gives background on her family, childhood, and Hollywood life though in the early chapters leading up to when she meets Prince Rainier, then it's all about the two of them. It's called Once Upon a Time: Behind the Fairy Tale of Princess Grace and Prince Rainier. I thought it was an interesting read.

James Spada does a very juicy bio of Grace.
Another thing that made her special were her impeccable manners. She was warm and gracious to everyone.
