I'm not even sure what I think about the special. He was out to offend as many people as he possibly could. I think he wanted to be the voice of reason. Like Babycakes said, it's disappointing that he now seems to think wealthy, famous men are society's victims.

I could see the voice of reason thinking. I think that is where he was going with his Bourdain joke. Maybe if he had said they were friends or something but instead it just seemed like a random topic for him to open with.
I'm not sensitive at all (some of you would judge me for the things I laugh at). But some of it seemed to be more to shock than to be funny. I have to be honest - I did laugh heartily at certain parts.

I used to absolutely love and die over “Chappelle’s Show”* and now I just find him loathesome. What a waste. He had a voice that could have been used for good and not evil. *(I still cannot see Wayne Brady anywhere without thinking, “Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?”) When my mind is wandering, I hear Negrodamus say, "White people love Wayne Brady because he makes Bryant Gumbel look like Malcolm X." And when I'm angry, I'll watch both Time Haters and Player Haters' Ball until I feel better.

Without having seen it, I am wagering that he was going less for the "voice of reason" and more for the "voice of black common sense", which often goes contrary to popular snowflake opinion and is almost defined by the fact that the victim is usually to blame.

Obviously NSFW language. Player Hater's Ball. This really was one of the best skits ever. So very offensive. Nowhere approaching PC. Awful, yet hysterical. RIP Buc Nasty and Pit Bull. The skit that changed pop culture-- I'm Rick James, Bitch!Wayne Brady. I had completely forgotten about the drive-by. Trading Spouses. Interracial edition. Where Leonard learns that white people don't use wash cloths. On a side note, I actually have been watching a lot of Neal Brennan's standup this year, and he's amazing. Is there a thread for comedy recs? Hmmm...off to look. ETA: Nothing exists, so I bumped the Funniest. Movie. Ever. thread so we can talk about our favorite specials and make recommendations.

I have never liked this dude, even when he was the toast of the town. The Wayne Brady skit had a brilliant idea at its center (what if white-on-white, goody two shoes, harmless Wayne Brady is actually a bad mofo), but its treatment of women is exactly how Chappelle always used women in skits: as props, window dressing or both. Ugh. Now he is emboldened by the social narrative of "snowflakes/SJWs versus the real victims: heterosexual men" and his jokes are clearly designed to push against that narrative and shock for the sake of his "I'm a rebel" badge. I wish he would just go away.

Same. I liked a few of his skits but most of them are pretty cringey, even back then. Doesn't surprise me he went towards super boomer, edge-lord side of comedy.

Will Smith and Jada should be squirming all over again, as - in line with Kathy Griffin’s prediction - this will be semi attributed to him.
Also read upthread a bit (have never checked out the thread before but just saw it at the top) and surprised to see the hate/dislike for him. I really like the guy, and his stand up specials. I see him as pushing against the Woke Millenials agenda. And I do see him as a voice of common sense. I would imagine that whilst his specials attract a lot of backlash by The Offended (and see Ricky Gervais’s brilliant summary of that category), it’s probably what a LOT of people are thinking, including myself. I also think that, as with Gervais, he seems to be a genuinely good/nice guy at core. It’s interesting that there are some comedians who’s comedy is a loooot tamer/safer/less controversial, and yet I detect an undeniable mean streak in them. (Ellen Degeneres is one prime example of this).
So yea, I don’t know if he’s “striving” to be the voice of common sense, as that word carries with it the implication that he’s missing the mark. For me personally, and judging by his pay cheque I imagine for a significant number of others, he IS a voice of sense, in a hilarious and often brave manner, and with it a very decent guy.

I feel bad for Dave being physically attacked, but is anyone really surprised by this? He has been absolutely on a tear to try to offend as many people as possible, by punching down on people who are really suffering right now in his last two “comedy” specials. I’m glad he’s OK, but I’m just pissed off that he’s gonna try to make himself a victim because he’s “keeping it real”.
Speaking of one of his classic bits from his Comedy Central show, this is when keeping it real goes really wrong when I don’t have any sympathy when you’ve been so terrible to people who are being marginalized and hurt right now (LBGTQ+, Asian Americans, Jewish Americans, feminists, women and the #MeToo movement, etc.). He’s not a brave champion against the woke mob (or whatever BS he believes he’s doing), but a bully who’s using his platform to do more harm.
I also don’t have sympathy for someone who threatens to take their $65 million investment because they don’t like the way that a housing project for low-income families was handled (in Yellow Springs, Ohio). Yes, the story is way more complicated than just him not wanting to live among the poors, but the way he handled it looked like he was a rich, entitled jerk who is willing to take his multi-million dollar bag and go home because of the housing development plan.
Glad he’s safe, but he continues to be terrible and now has ammunition that’s he’s being silenced.
