Last season was the first time they really changed it up. They only had 10 dancers and they were paired with an all star from the very beginning. I can't remember how exactly they did the eliminations but it was the lowest vote getters regardless of sex. So by the end it was like three guys and one girl. This year it seems like they are doing a combination of what they did the first six seasons and last season. I guess I don't like it when the judges are basically the sole deciders because it takes away that surprise element. We all know who their favorites have been since the beginning and who is going to end up in the finale because of that.
IMO the judges pay lip service to hip hop and crumping as an art, and because they bring in the viewers. But deep down they really truly don't consider those forms of dance as important as contemporary or ballroom or the other types that take years to perfect. Maybe since the show seems to be more about pure dance and less about celebrities or popularity, they wanted to make sure the winner was someone they considered to be truly a dance professional. If they could go back and choose we they felt should have won, I wonder if they would have changed the outcome.
I mostly agree with you. I would say they actually don't have a lot of respect for ballroom either. I don't think they are necessarily looking for the purest dancer, I think it is who best fits their storyline. It is true that in the past sometimes the more talented dancers went home before they should have. But alternatively the judges have also always saved dancers who the voters truly hated because they either fit some predetermined story line or if it is a hot girl because she is hot. In the end I guess it doesn't matter, I don't think there has ever been a winner who was a total travesty. I didn't think Russell should have won but he wasn't terrible either. Speaking of Russell I have noticed since he won there has not been a really strong hip hop dancer on the show. Even Tad doesn't seem like he can hit really hard. I think the judges are afraid of having another hip hop dancer who wins mainly on the strength of their charisma.
I think it was the one year that Russell won the finale, probably because he had the popular vote more than his ability or range.
