I'm sure I've said it here before, but the phrase, "Damn you, Franco!" is well known in my household. There's a personal story behind that, not that he was personally a douche to me, but that he IS a douche. And all stories and tales about him being one are 100% accurate.

Yeah, I remember hearing stories about him and his "acting school" a few years ago. He went silent for a while, then came back like nothing happened.

The rich and famous stick together, especially when they are financially tied to one another. I'm so not surprised Maggie G made light of his actions, she's selling the show. She's a producer, right? The success of the show is the important thing to her. On set, she may be cold as ice to him, but she will sell her show. Until the connection becomes a professional liability to them (see the cast of Woody Allen's last movie distancing themselves from it an him), they will usually stick together.

I am actually surprised about Hollywood types trying to defend Franco. I mean, I can see why Weinstein was protected at some point, after all, he was a powerfully connected, Oscar-winning producer/talent broker/all-around Hollywood dealmaker whose Miramax company was the toast of the town both artistically and financially. But Franco? He is just a douchebag working actor who thinks he is some sort of rennaisance man... He is not even a box office superstar working actor, like say, Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt.

Here's the exact quote from Maggie Gyllenhaal's Fresh Air interview:

Once the women making those allegations came forward, my understanding - and you can correct me if I'm wrong - is that the producers had to figure out how and even if to proceed after that.

I think we all had to do exactly what I'm - what I was just describing, which is, we had to do the most careful, nuanced, intelligent, clear thinking - all of us - and assess the situation. I felt as a producer, it was my job to confront that and talk with him and also to talk with the women on our show, both in the cast and on the crew, and make sure that everyone felt that they had been treated with absolutely nothing but respect in the workplace.

And for me - and I think this was true for everybody involved - I felt that continuing to tell our feminist story was the most important thing and made the most sense, even in light of those allegations. I mean, in terms of making a show which is about all of these things that we're talking about, I think it would be a terrible shame not to be able to continue the conversation, which is, I think, a deeply nuanced conversation about exactly what's happening culturally right now in terms of misogyny, in terms of an imbalance of power, in terms of sex as commodification, in terms of all the subtleties of that.

So they talked. And it would be terrible if they weren't able to continue with the show, since it's so important and is doing such a great job of addressing these issues.

Sadly I'm not just because Hollywood always tends to protect their own, and he's been a working actor for about 20 years now and is friends with or knows a lot of important people (Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, Jason Segel, etc.)
