Well, I don't know about that. In a USA Today article, this caught my eye:

Penn and Franco's first smooch lasted "a minute. It doesn't sound like a long time, but in front of 200 people, it's a long time," says Franco. "We're sitting on the curb, kissing. You can't deny what's going on. I'm kissing Spicoli and it's still going and it's not stopping and it was when he had a beard and the beard is scraping me. Afterwards, we were like, 'All right, how are those Raiders?' "

I wonder if his handlers pressured him to say that. It sounds so tacky and immature. I mean: "How about those Raiders?" I think any person lining up to go see a Harvey Milk biopic in the first place, is not going to be shocked by this or need Franco to affirm his masculinity for them.

Why doesn't he just do like Jodie Foster and refrain from discussing private matters, instead of going on about the Raiders and scrapy, prickly, icky beards. Just don't say anything at all.

He seems like an interesting, smart guy. And he responds to the Tyrese drama.

One of the issues he addresses is a conflict we had discussed between himself and Tyrese on the set of the film Annapolis. In Los Angeles, Franco had almost seemed despairing when I mentioned this, explaining that when the two of them had been in the boxing ring on the second-to-last day of shooting, Tyrese had thought that Franco deliberately punched him for real, something he wholeheartedly denies. Tyrese has subsequently linked this with Franco’s Method tendencies and has continued to pillory Franco. (“I hear,” Franco told me, “he wants to blow up my hotel room.”) In his e-mail Franco writes about how much he wishes there was a way to put the whole unfortunate incident behind him: “I take full blame for any problems on that film. If he had a bad experience working with me, I was probably a jerk. I was not purposely cruel to him, but I was probably so wrapped up in my performance that I was not as friendly as I could have been. This is such a stupid issue I can’t believe I’m still talking about it. But when I’m asked about it in the press it makes it seem as if it’s still an issue. I think Tyrese is a sweet guy with a good heart. I wish him all the best.”

Call me crazy, but I don't see the talking about beards/Raiders thing as him trying to reaffirm his masculinity; I see it just as him explaining the awkwardness of the whole thing. Making out with another guy in front of 200 people has to be awkward, hell I think I would find that awkward and I'm a hetero chick. And once it's over, it's kind of like, what are you supposed to talk about? I think bringing up the Raiders was just small talk, a way to alleviate the strangeness of the situation.

I've said "how about them Leafs, huh?" to someone after doing a lot more than just necking with him. It's not the funniest stab at humour, but a stab at humour it nonetheless is.

I've never been a big fan of his, but he was hilarious in Pineapple Express. He made Saul very likable when that character could have easily been annoying as hell.

I think he could potentially be good looking but he has unfortunate hair and his skin always looks ashen, almost gray.
