This is so surprising. Perhaps it's because HGTV and I ARE Cam and Mitchell, but we still love it.

We still love it too. We just acquired the first half of season 1, which we missed, and are enjoying that as well.

I agree; I thought Phil was a jerk about the supermarket incident. He's ogling another woman with his wife right there, and causes her to fall. Then he denies it and tries to humiliate Claire by turning it into a "yeah, yeah, you're always right", even enlisting the kids and making faces and stuff behind her back. Talk about undermining his wife's authority with the kids. Plus - she WAS right. Ugh. I'm stretching here, but I imagine the parental roles of Phil and Claire to be kind of like Jon and Kate. I kind of sympathize when only one person is the responsible one. (Like I said -- I'm stretching!! In no way is Kate likable but that's really with all the other crazy factors.) I'm feeling the same way about S3 on Modern Family as with Community. It's just a little more typical and expected now, so the novelty has worn off. I do think both shows are miles above the other sitcoms I've watched.

Yeah, Phil drives me crazy. I hate his "just one of the kids" attitude. I think Claire and Phil as a couple make sense because anyone who wanted any say in how that household was run would never last long with Claire but I don't like how Phil sometimes undermines Claire in order to get in good with the kids. That is why I don't really care for the character.

They did an episode where Claire and Phil traded roles in parenting and Phil went way overboard, so I understand that Claire is better suited to being the overseer of the kids. But yeah, Phil's goofy-ass, I'm-just-like-my-12-year-old-son act is annoying. And it's one thing to try to be the "cool" parent, but it's another to undermine your spouse. It's petty and immature.

Phil is very annoying but I do find him to be a realistic character, at least, because I know parents exactly like that. If a character is realistic, I can at least appreciate him/her, even if I don't like them. On the other hand, I think Gloria is unrealistic as hell -- and I like her, too. So I am pretty much all over the board over here.

So did anyone watch this show extended Target commercial last night?
I want those new plastic carts at my Target. And paper Target bags with handles! I've never seen those before.

We watched. There have been a few dud episodes this season and this was one of them IMO. It's like the writers phoned it in. And the girl who plays Lily has got to go. Her forced line readings kill whatever humor might be in them. It's hard to believe with all the girls who auditioned for the part this was the best one they could find. I know that sounds harsh because she's a child, but hey, she really does suck. Lily can help breathe a little life into dying episodes. She's an important character.
