It seemed way too frenetic and contrived. It was Dec. 16 and super-organized Claire didn't have the tree up and the gifts bought? Or Cameron, who loves all things glittery and celebratory? And if Claire and Hailey were shopping for gifts, what were Cam and Jay wrapping? And did Phil throw the baseball card in the dumpster just because it was wrinkled? And Phil went shopping for a turkey, which then had to be cooked from frozen? Even a pre-cooked turkey takes hours to heat through. It was just too contrived, like they thought of Xpress Xmas and then tried to write silly plotlines to get to that point.

But, I also think there's a definite decline in overall quality this season. It has to happen eventually, but I thought Modern Family would take longer than most shows to lose it's freshness.

Ariel Winter (Alex Dunphy) apparently has not lived a charmed life: LINK I read in another article that Ariel's older sister had herself been removed from their mother's custody when she was 12. Also, Ariel's brother, who was the kid in the Adaam's Family movies, is defending mom. What a mess. It wouldn't be unusual for a mother to abuse her daughters and be kind to her son (or the other way around). Abusive people like to pick and choose who they abuse, and it usually depends on who they feel most threatened by.

I've been watching this in the news. Her Mom sounds awful. The way she is talking to the press about this is really shitty. She's been acting like things blew up because she suddenly wasn't okay with Ariel's boyfriend being 18 and Ariel is doing this for vengeance. Um, no. It's takes more than teen relationship drama for CPS to remove someone from the home. I think there's something going on with abuse involving the daughters.
ETA: Not that I don't side-eye an 18-year-old boy dating a 14-year-old girl, too. But people are saying that Ariel is with uncomfortable with her mother sexualizing here career so early. So maybe there is a factor in the issue.

Terrible. I remember her at some awards show getting a lot of shit for wearing something way too sexy. I guess mom went out and bought that number for her.
I just hope she doesn't fall apart like so many of these kids do. She's super cute and good on the show. Please please please go to school.
Speaking of the show - this week was hilarious. Cam and the soy facon ... oh man.

At least she has an ally in her sister, some poor kids don't have anyone.
Back to the show, I loved it when Phil gave Haley such a thorough dressing down. And Claire's response when Haley asked where they were going..."To get that man a waffle!" Gold.

I thought the Australia episode was a disappointment. I realize it's only a half hour and they have a dozen characters and three separate families to work in, but then why not stretch it into a two-parter? Even the Brady Bunch Hawaii trip was three episodes, as was their Grand Canyon trip. Why fly all the way to Australia for 22 minutes of footage?
And the family was being awful, which seems more common. Do they really not appreciate where they are? Are they so well travelled that a trip to Australia is something you blow off to chase a celebrity you hadn't even heard of, or to hole up inside to work on a closet deal?
And that closet deal falling through? Did the client sign the contract? If yes, then it's done, they can't just go to the competition the next day. And if not, then Claire shouldn't have been so smug about getting this big deal since it wasn't a sure thing.
They were there for Phil, yet they mostly ignored him and his quest. The only realistic part was the teen boys trying to see boobs. Heh.

Phil and the boys were the best parts of the episode. Poor Phil kept getting injured and only Gloria seemed to care, poor Phil.
