I really wanted this show to do well when it first came out because Joel McHale is awesome on The Soup, if for no other reason than skewering the stupidity of so much TeeVee so I don't have to, but the first few eps were "meh" and I quit watching. I tuned back in for the fish sticks and the paintball, and the scripts have taken a GIANT step up. Somebody got their funny on in a big way.
ETA: D'oh! I said "fish sticks" but I meant "chicken fingers." I've had fish sticks ("fish fingers" in UK) on the brain ever since the new Doctor with the interesting physiognomy ate them dipped in custard.

Was this episode supposed to be like a certain movie? If so which one? I thought it was a really good episode, but I couldn't place what movie they were referencing!

I was so meh on this show, and thus missed quite a few episodes. I tuned back in right around the psychology experiment, and thought, "Wow. This show has hit its stride". Was this episode supposed to be like a certain movie? If so which one? I thought it was a really good episode, but I couldn't place what movie they were referencing! They were spoofing *everything*. Terminator, Mad Max, The Matrix, The Killer, Die Hard, Rambo, Predator, The Warriors, 28 Days Later, etc,. Pure Brilliance from beginning to end.

I think it was bunches of action movie cliches all rolled up into one episode, although there were clear nods to Die Hard (dirty tank top, gun taped to the back) and other movies (can't identify them though, I'm a horrible movie namer)
This show has really picked up since the first few episodes. I adore Joel McHale and have a huuuge crush on his smokin' hot bod.

I've only seen Die Hard out of all of those movies listed! No wonder I couldn't figure it out. Even so I thought it was an excellent episode!

I've seen enough action movies to know that's what they were parodying, though I didn't get all the references. Now that I've read a few recaps and been reminded of a few movies I'll have to watch the episode again to see if I can catch them better.
It really is amazing how much it improved so quickly. I'm so glad my love for Joel McHale made me stick with it (if you ever get a chance to see his stand-up do it! He's even more awesome in person.)
And I continue to love all their little digs at Glee. Stupid overrated dreck.

And I continue to love all their little digs at Glee. Stupid overrated dreck. Me too. Although I half like Glee and half find it annoying as hell. I read somewhere that Community and Glee film on the same soundstage. I don't know why but I'm always surprised that Joel McHale is so muscular. He's cute but fully dressed he looks like he just has a normal body. Then when he takes off his shirt its like, damn!

Oooh, where was the 28 Days Later reference?
I don't know if they got new writers or the old writers started getting vitamin shots or what, but I'm not complaining. This show has gotten very cool.

Oooh, where was the 28 Days Later reference? When Jeff wakes up from his nap, gets out of his car and sees the carnage and the lack of people. It's almost exactly like the scene when Cillian Murphy wakes up in 28 Days Later.
