It's official: “Texas Hold 'Em” ascends to # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 (Beyonce is the first black person ever to have a country song top the Hot 100), and holds at # 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart for a second week (on this chart, she is the first black woman ever to have a # 1 hit). Beyonce Makes History on the Hot 100 & on the Hot Country Songs charts.

Love the whole disc. It's certainly what Beyonce described it as: “This ain’t a Country album. This is a ‘Beyoncé’ album.” It is a genre-bending endeavor that, just like the best country albums, is confessional and storytelling-heavy, while integrating the expected banjos, fiddles & slide guitars with opera (yep, opera), hip hop-esque beats, gospel, and blues (the last two of which are core elements of country music anyway).
She also covers Dolly Parton's "Jolene" and gives it an awesome lyrical overhaul (and yes, Parton herself gave Bey her blessing to tweak the lyrics). I am sure that the country establishment will have a heart attack at how Beyonce repurposes "Jolene," but I love it, and I love it just as much as the original. I actually wish that it eventually gets released as a single.
Another highlight that should be a single is a true-blue duet between Miley Cyrus and Beyonce called "II Most Wanted": it has a gorgeous melody and gorgeous harmonies, and lyrics that remind me of a modern-day Thelma & Louise narrative.

I'm very proud of her for being able to artistically break out of the corner that black music artists still have in the music industry. Only seeing African Americans as rap/hip-hop/R&B and that's it is truly frustrating to see the Grammys give AOTY to white "pop" artists over the past decade. It's too consistent to been seen as just being paranoid about racism. Let's keep it a buck: there are FAR too many country listeners flying a flag that would still support chattel slavery. I ain't even a stan to see it!
