Dune. Loved everything about it. Rebecca Ferguson is an absolute goddess and should be in all the things. Oscar Isaac is so hot it hurts and Timothee Chalamet finally impressed me. Yes!! Emphatic co-sign. My only real quibble is that I'm not sure it was 100% clear how powerful the bene gesserit are...in the book it's very clear that they basically shape the world but in the movie I thought they came across more 'cool witches.' But perhaps that will be remedied in further movies, it was very wise that they didn't attempt to cover the entire book. Also (spoiler for TMI not for an actual spoiler) {Spoiler}every scene between Jason Momoa and Timotheeeee made me have to kinkshame myself

I bought the novel a few days ago, but I don't think I'll have time to finish it before Christmas. Will the movie still be in theatres? I can't decide if I should just see it and then read Dune after...

FWIW I would just see it, it’s so visually stunning that I’m glad I saw it on a big screen. There is so much of the book that is not in the movie that I don’t think seeing the movie would really ruin anything for you.

The French Dispatch. Not my favorite Wes Anderson (convinced nothing will ever beat The Royal Tennenbaums for me), but if you like Wes Anderson it's delightfully Wes Anderson. The reviews I saw said it's "the most Wes Anderson-y Wes Anderson movie ever". Depending on the reviewer, that was either a good thing or a bad thing. I loved The Royal Tenenbaums, I tolerated The Life Aquatic, and I turned off both Moonrise Kingdom and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Sometimes I consider giving Budapest Hotel another chance but I don't know if it's worth it. Wes Anderson's shtick tends to be too much for me.

I wish the scout camp had been the entire movie of Moonrise Kingdom. None of the other stories delighted me as much as the camp. I remember liking Grand Budapest Hotel when I watched it, but I don't think I could tell you one thing about that movie except Ralph Fiennes was a concierge. It didn't stay with me.
Maybe it's just because the time of my life when I watched them, but my favorite WA films are still his first three. Royal Tenenbaums is a masterpiece, IMO. Everything, even Gwyneth, is perfect in that movie, IMO.

I just saw The Last Duel, in large part due to Adam Driver's hotness.
But I was not terribly impressed by the movie and I love a good period film, particularly the medieval period.. But it def felt like movie stars in (bad) wigs. They told the story three ways from different character's but it was felt like it was way more self-important than it needed to be. Damon just annoys me. I did enjoy Affleck's turn as a spoiled, callow weirdly blond Lord. (I don't think he was acting.) Its was like Affleck and Damon, as the ex-Miramax mascots, attempted a movie to throw a bone to the #Metoo followers.
But it retold the story of a rape fairly explicitly three times. I would have liked more material by Nicole Holocefer and less Matt Damon. Isn't that what the world basically needs in a nutshell?
And I went to a theater to see it! First time in a year and a half.

I went to see the French Dispatch. I figured it would be safe since hardly anyone goes to Wes Anderson movies when Covid is not raging. lol. I thought it was OK. The 1st story about the painter in the prison was just OK. the second story about the student protests I thought was bad/boring. The third story about the kidnapping written by the food critique/James Baldwin was my favorite. I wish they had made the entire movie a longer version of that story.

Last Night in Soho. I really liked it, as it hit on a lot of what I like in movies: '60's setting (at least partially), London locale, fashion, music. Plus, I know Anya Taylor-Joy is the new IT girl (and she's very good in this), but I really like Thomasin McKenzie in this movie.

The Eternals it was good but kind of a slog. Characters were all great but it just took a long time getting anywhere. I'll see the next one but it's not one of my favourite MCU movies. It has two end credit scenes.
