Still not getting the love for George Clooney in Michael Clayton. Same here. It was just okay. I will not be a happy camper if he's the one who'll be taking home his second Oscar instead of Day-Lewis.

I saw There Will Be Blood, and just don't get the love. My friend, with whom I saw it, said after the first 10 or so minutes, "When is something going to happen? Does Paul Thomas Anderson have a great love for this part of the country, because we're seeing a lot of it...for a looong time." I agree. Now I lurve Daniel Day-Lewis and I thought created a stunning character, but I would have liked to see that much of his work in a different film.
Julie Christie in Away From Her? Frickin' phenomenal.

Julie Christie in Away From Her? Frickin' phenomenal. Yes, I hope she wins. I don't know though because she's already won before, and there seems to be an unstated rule nowadays that once an actress is over a certain age, she can't win more than one Oscar. I hope Christie fares better than Burstyn, Spacek, and Keaton did since I wouldn't classify Cotillard as the hot young actress as Roberts, Berry, and Theron were. She's just not as well known, and she's in a film that's in a foreign language. So I hope that helps Julie Christie. I'm still not sure about Sweeney Todd's chances overall because Tim Burton isn't exactly an Oscar favorite, but I think that Johnny Depp could still win even if the film doesn't get a Best Picture nomination since I think they're just dying to give him an Oscar finally. It feels a lot like when he was up against Sean Penn. Even though Depp had won the SAG and Bill Murray had won the GG for Comedy/Musical, I knew there was no way that Penn was going to lose because he had already been nominated thrice, and it just felt like the perfect time for them to finally honor him. I get the same feeling with Depp since if he gets in, it will be his third nomination, and Sweeney Todd seems like the perfect opportunity for them to honor him. Although Day Lewis could be a spoiler since some may feel he should have won his second for Gangs of New York.

I can't believe that Atonement and Sweeney did not get more SAG love. I'll be honest here, I have not seen Sweeney Todd or There Will Be Blood yet. But I have heard great things about Depp's performance and I think it would be great if he won, if it was deserved. I would hate to see another one of those, we are giving people Oscar's who got screwed when it should have been their year. I think last year the Academy went away from that and it was nice.

So, what with Vanessa Redgrave bailing out some men from Guantamino (her quote: "Guantanamo Bay is a concentration camp. It is a disgrace that these men have been kept there all these years."), I think that increases the chances of Garai or Ronan for that nomination, no?

Why? Most of Hollywood leans heavily to the left.

Was very disappointed about the lack of Atonement love from the SAG but it's not surprising they want to award the work of one of their own which is why I get all the Into The Wild noms (without having seen the movie).
I think Atonement may really go Cold Mountain's way with lots of GG noms all around but losing out there and then only a handful noms for Oscar where back then Nicole was excluded and Jude and Renee got in. For some reason I still see chances for James. Maybe it's because I don't see Emile, Ryan and Clooney making it all three in. One of these will be shut out, it's likely to be Emile but then again, Ryan was nominated last year, will they really give him another nom when he has really no shot at winning again. The only locks in the male lead category for me at this point are still Day-Lewis and Depp, because the Academy loves them both...

Why? Most of Hollywood leans heavily to the left. Not really. Hollywood is very liberal, but they don't lean that far to the left. This wouldn't be the first time there's some controversy with Redgrave and the Oscars. Her speech when she won for Julia was met by both applause and boos. And later in the broadcast an Oscar presenter basically said she should just shut up(nicer wording of course) and he was met with thundering applause. I don't want to get too off topic but if you look her up on wikipedia you can read more about the incident.

According to People.com,
"After considerable outreach to Golden Globe actor nominees and their representatives over the past several weeks, there appears to be unanimous agreement that these actors will not cross Writers Guild of America picket lines to appear on the Golden Globe Awards as acceptors or presenters," said SAG president Alan Rosenberg. "We applaud our members for this remarkable show of solidarity for striking Writers Guild of America writers."
So unless this strike gets sorted asap it looks like the oscars may suffer the same fate. That saddens me because I love watching the oscars, probably more for what people are wearing than who wins these days.

Seriously, since I was a kid I look forward to Oscar night as much, if not more so, than Christmas. So I really, really hope this gets settled soon.
If it's not going to be broadcast, is there just gonna be some newspeople giving us updates? diablo, can you swipe someone's iPhone and let us know what's going down as it happens?
The National Society of Film Critics handed Picture, Director and Actor to There Will Be Blood. Julie Christie again, Casey Affleck for Jesse James and Cate Blanchett for supporting.
It seems like Best Actress is pretty much Christie's to lose, with a possible upset from Cotillaird or Page.
I will be shocked if Daniel Day-Lewis loses. He *is* the movie and is pretty much in every scene, for three-ish hours.
Picture is probably No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood.
