Call Me By Your Name is getting a lot of praise, but it isn't it about a 30-something man having a romance with a 17-year-old? How is that considered a love story? If teenage girls, even when consenting, can't have legit relationships with older men, how can teenage boys? Or am I wrong about the plot? Right? I started reading the book and was so thoroughly creeped out I couldn’t get through it. I realize there’s a significant historical basis for ‘gay relationships’* with a large age gap but there’s significant historical basis for many things we no longer romanticize. Plus in the book, the younger character is really very sheltered, making it even more distressing/clear that the older is taking advantage. *In quotes because this is not how the Greeks would have really thought of them, I believe!

FYI, just because I'm a stickler for details, the ages of the two guys in Call Me By Your Name are 17 and 24, not thirty-something.
Commence critique.

Although Armie Hammer is 30 and looks it, and the 17-year-old actor looks 14. So it looks creepy to me.

And it annoys me that it keeps topping all the best movies of 2017 lists movie critics are producing right now. I will see Lady Bird eventually though. I just have to get over my strong irrational dislike of Greta Gerwig a little more.

I absolutely adored Call me by your name; it’s the only movie I’ve seen this year that has left its mark and I can’t wait to see it again. The age thing didn’t bother me at all tbh. I can see why it might be a problem for others (it seems to be in particular a problem for Americans, which I get). And Timothée is phenomenal in this. I know he won’t win the Oscar but his performance will be a fave of mine forever.

A lot of those TV series nominations are pretty stale. Curb Your Enthusiasm? Uzo Aduba again, even though she didn't really do much last season on OITNB? Robin Wright again? Yawn.

I'm happy to see Bob Odenkirk pick up a nomination for his work on Better Call Saul. Somehow, I don't think he's going to get it, but I will be tickled pink if he does.

Alison Janey deserves all the awards. (And I still can't believe Cumberbatch was nominated for that awful Sherlock! Martin was so much better too.)

We just got back from Darkest Hour and I think Gary Oldman will get the Oscar for it. I didn't exactly love every minute of the movie, but he definitely managed to convince me he was Churchill.
