I will definitely have to sit out this next award season. Folks over on Awardswatch are going nuts over Lady Gaga and now that the movie has premiered to positive reviews in Venice, it's full on. And I know she will campaign the hell out of this; I mean she campaigned for over a year trying to win a Best Song Oscar so my guess is I will go gaga myself if I follow the season too closely this year ;-) Unfortunately, my boo Joel Edgerton directed a movie that might do well (Boy Erased) so I may have to be all up in this awards season. It's going to be an endless, eye-rolling Gaga headache. On another note, the Academy's announcement of the creation of a "Popular Movie" awards makes me chuckle and think of a conversation that went on here. Someone in another thread expressed dismay that A Quiet Place was going to piggyback off of the critical success of Get Out and get the Oscar(s) that Get Out deserved. I thought - that's ridiculous, it will never happen. And then the Academy created a special category for the express purpose of making it happen.Everybody knows they created that category so that Black Panther could win a big award; and that's exactly why I'm side eyeing the heck out of it. That being said I saw BlacKKKlansman today and I was super impressed - I would imagine it's going to get a ton of nominations (winning is another thing). Count as someone not looking forward to A Star Is Born. It's a story that's been done a bazillion times and both Gaga and Cooper are so friggin extra.......

The early reviews of A Star is Born have said it is good but not amazing. And Lady Gaga has been getting praise but they’re saying Bradley Cooper is the real standout. I’m sure it’ll still get a big push and she’ll probably still sing at the Oscars even if she isn’t in the mix for best actress. The Golden Globes are what I’m dreading. Because they have the separate category for comedy/musical, A Star is Born is going to sweep that. And she’ll definitely win best actress there.

I’m hoping it turns into an Evita-era Madonna thing, she wins the Golden Globe but doesn’t get nominated for an Oscar and her consolation prize will be singing at the ceremony.

Adapted screenplay will go to Crazy Rich Asians and it is deserving.

I’m calling it now, A Star Is Born is this years LaLa Land. It will get glowing reviews and a lot of hype but as awards season gets closer people will take a second look and remember that it’s the third reiteration of the movie (or is the fourth) and they’ll remember how thin and basic the plot is.

It’s the fourth version of this movie. The Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand versions are the most famous, the 1937 original with Janet Gaynor has been largely forgotten although it did win the Oscar for screenplay. No version of it has ever won any acting Oscars.

The original was so huge, so this remake has a lot to live up to. I hope Lady Gaga does Barbara proud.

Whoever is responsible for cutting the trailer should get an award. It’s really compelling. 9/10 times I’ve seen it in the theaters, people audibly gasp when the title comes up at the end.
I think Gaga looks good in it. Best actress good? Who knows. I will say that I am oddly proud of Bradley Cooper though. He has worked with enough talented directors at this point to really learn from the best.
