One of my best friends works the awards circuit, and she told me back in May that everyone in Hollywood who's seen the film, loves it. I didn't think the trailer was all that and said "really?" She said that her friend who works for an awards consultant said people in his line of work think it will be the film to beat this year.
She's been wrong before, but she swears this is what the awards consultants are gearing up for, and fighting against if it's not their film. I have no desire to see it. I'm meh on both Bradley and Gaga.
And let's be honest, getting rave reviews isn't the only path to Oscar glory. I'll start the Oscar game after Toronto...

Much as I am rooting for A Star is Born, I can't imagine Best Actress going to anyone besides Glenn Close for The Wife. She is beyond way overdue, and she's getting terrific reviews for this one.
Also First Man feels like it has all the pre-requisites to win the Best Picture. American history. Bio-pic. Director coming off another Oscar favorite. Moving into overdue lead actor.
It is looking we have a LOT of good movies in the next few months. Finally, Oscar season is here!

Oh God, First Man is Damien Chazelle's new movie, yes? Of course it'll win Best Picture, so the stories can be all about how it's a happy ending for Damien after winning/not-winning BP in 2017.
And I hate that new popular film category. Just go back to having 10 Best Picture noms, AMPAS. The few years they had done so, they had nominees like District 9, Avatar, Up, The Blind Side (ugh), Toy Story 3. When they changed the voting system again it's when all this nonsense began that it could be anything from 5 to 10 nominees and they went back to excluding so-called popular films.

I'm already so sick of A Star is Born. I can't stand Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga's acting in the trailer did not impress me. She is no Barbra, Judy or Janet.
I woke up this morning and for some reason this thought popped into my head: "Emma Stone is an Oscar winner. Emma Stone. How weird is that?"
I'm glad more movies are being released in the theaters and Netflix/streaming/VOD around the same time. That's how I saw Mudbound, which was phenomenal.

Whoever is responsible for cutting the trailer should get an award. It’s really compelling. 9/10 times I’ve seen it in the theaters, people audibly gasp when the title comes up at the end. Not long ago, my wizard and I were watching videos on youtube, and he showed me a site that edits famous movie trailers. Seeing classics like Mary Poppins and Jaws edited with a specific and completely different intent showed how easy it is to sway viewers to visualize the film through a specific lens (so to speak).

I want to see A Star is Born but agree that Gaga is going to be insufferable on her campaigning. She's told her "99 people in the room didn't believe in me, but 1 person (Bradley Cooper) did" and the "Bradley wiped the makeup off my face so he could really see me" stories so many times already and the movie's not even out yet! And bitch, please. You're Lady Gaga, not some neophyte plucked off the streets.
I know the Golden Globes are total star-fuckers, but I've heard whisperings that ASIB may not be eligible for the Best Comedy/Musical categories as it is considered a drama with music rather than a musical. If this happens, it would allow Crazy Rich Asians to have more of a presence at the ceremony, which would be more appropriate for the current climate. I don't have a lot of hope for this, but we'll see.

I love those! My favorite is Mrs. Doubtfire recut as a horror movie trailer.

I'm so over A Star is Born. It's gonna be a long 6 months, isn't it?

No point in me watching any of the contenders, I will not be watching the least funny Oscars in history. Hard pass.
