As much as I loved Amy Adams in Enchanted I really don't think she deserves an Oscar for it. She was great and did carry the movie but not in the same memorable way (IMO) that Depp or Streep did in Pirates and Prada (heh...that sounds like a movie title).

The Independent Spirit Awards were announced. I'm wondering if this snub might finally put Kidman out of the running. And now I'm thinking Marisa Tomei might have a shot.

Margot at the Wedding. For which they DID nominate Jennifer Jason Leigh, so obviously they watched it. I think Kidman was already on the fringes, so I can't see this helping her case.

Margot at the Wedding. Nicole's been getting good reviews for the film but I don't think this is her year. I'm little surprised that the studio isn't pushing for her in the supporting actress category for The Golden Compass. I think she might have better chance in that.

Ah, that's right. I've been reading "The Golden Compass" press all day and this totally slipped my mind.

Congratulations, Diablo Cody!!! First major nomination of many, I suspect. Too bad Laura Linney didn't get a nom for The Savages. I flove her.

And it's supposed to be some of her best work, too. They are -- I saw a FYC ad in one of the trades at the office recently. I think they're just waiting for the movie to open before they make a huge push. Kidman is amazing in Margot, but the character isn't the troubled-yet-redeemed, villain-with-humanity type that would get an Oscar. She's very unlikable but compelling. I'll call Juno as taking the GG for Musical/Comedy. One, because it's awesome. Two, several musicals could divide the vote. Did I mention that it's awesome? I didn't think she was the second coming and I didn't care for Dylan, but Blanchett can't not win for Supporting Actress. The only thing she has against her is winning too recently, but it's hers to lose. The recent discussion has me thinking -- is it *really* a bad year for actresses? I mean, if Linney can get "snubbed" in one major race but the ISAs still find other worthy candidates... I think it's usually just a matter of a lot of great performances yet the acting categories (both male & female) being very narrow when it comes to what earns noms -- we don't seem to have the guarantees of real person, crazy or junkie this year.

National Board of Review's choices are out. I can't remember their track record but they usually tend to get most of the best film pics in their top ten.
They named Julie Christie best actress. George Clooney best actor. Casey Affleck got supporting for Jesse James. Amy Ryan from Gone, Baby, Gone for supporting.Tim Burton got best director. Best movie was No Country for Old men. Diablo Cody shared best original screenplay with the writer of Lars & the real girl. Ben affleck got best directorial debut. Ellen Page got best breakthrough female performance. Best foreign film was The Diving Bell & the Butterfly.
Their top ten was
THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD ATONEMENT THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM THE BUCKET LIST INTO THE WILD JUNO THE KITE RUNNER LARS AND THE REAL GIRL MICHAEL CLAYTON SWEENEY TODD

However, I'm getting scared now that The Bucket List actually made their top 10. I was thinking it would be more along the lines of an Anger Management or something for Jack Nicholson, but it looks like it might be more now, and that might mean he finally gets Oscar number 4. I don't think he deserved it for As Good As It Gets; although I thought he was great in About Schimdt. I wouldn't have given it to him that year, but I think he actually deserved the nomination instead of just getting in because he's Jack. I could be wrong since he got overlooked for The Departed last year which I thought was incredible because I figured he would get in.
