it, ivy?
YES! Thank-you! You have no idea how long this has been bugging me for! I vaguely remember the troll Christmas movie, too. In fact, the part about "troll the ancient yuletide carols" is the part I remember the most. I seem to recall there was something about a train in it, so I think that one in the link is probably the right one.

Okay, not thinking of a specific movie here, but I need desperate help! Can any of y'all think of movies -- preferably pre-1990 -- that featured big makeovers and/or shopping sprees. Think HorseyFace in Pretty Woman, that sort of thing. HAAAALP!

Would Just One of the Guys count since the big makeover was from girl to guy? Here are a few links discussing makeover scenes - not sure if it'll help but worth checking out: Makeovers 1Makeovers 2Oh, how about Working Girl and Ruthless People? There's a scene in the latter where Bette Midler is trying on different fashions created by the woman who kidnapped her.

There's Clueless obviously, but that's post-1990. Both Grease and Cry-Baby have the "good girl gone bad" makeover if that counts? The Winona Ryder Little Women was post-1990, but you could use one of the earlier interpretations for the Meg at the ball scene. Cinderella of course, and any Cinderella/ Pygmalion-themed film. I particularly liked Ever After which is also post-1990. Heather Duke had a mini-makeover with the help of the red scrunchie. She got way more glam, but she was already a Heather. Marie-Antoinette has excellent shopping/makeover scenes but it came out pretty recently. Night of the Comet sort of, as they were trapped in a mall. She's All That which was spoofed in Just Another Teen Movie- oops, too late again. Carrie Muriel's Wedding Vertigo Desperately Seeking Susan Andie tried to look preppy for like 5 minutes in Pretty in Pink and Annie Potts went all yuppie. And how could I forget Weird Science for the dork to cool guy makeovers? Gangster movies are also good for this theme as the guy moves from small-time to $1000 suits- Scarface, Al Capone, New Jack City,DeNiro in Godfather II.
This doesn't count but I just had a flashback to when Nancy from Nightmare on Elm Street played the uptight Marie Lubbock on Just The Ten of Us, and then the Lubbock girls would get all hot to form their singing group, to play at some local dive. Who wrote that garbage?

How about The Princess Diaries?
Also, there's that one episode of The Brady Bunch where Marsha helps transform the shy nerdy girl Molly into a knockout, but I don't know if that counts....
