I think he does something different with the chain--he kind of folds it in half and slings it over the rope, and holds onto the chains themselves, and then lets go when he lands.
I watched for this, 'cause I didn't understand how he did it at first, either.

I saw The Ring 2 last night, and I just need to vent. Naomi Watts is supposed to work at a small-town newspaper, and in the beginning of the movie, everyone in the newsroom is gathered around the police scanner listening to the cops talk about a body they found. The crime reporter is standing by the scanner writing down all these details the cops are giving over the scanner about what the body looks like. There's no way the cops would be blabbing all that stuff over the scanner where anyone could hear it. I used to be a crime reporter in a small town, and sometimes you're lucky to get a location of a body, if anything, from the scanner.
I just get picky when people misrepresent my profession. Plus, the movie was so boring, I had plenty of time to be annoyed by this stuff.

__way in the background you can see a car driving away. Peter Jackson was actually a bit amused at how diligent the fans have been in finding mistakes in the trilogy.__
I've watched for this repeatedly, and I've never seen it. erm, how do I do quotes?
MaryWebGirl and Whistletops That's what I thought.

Chenoeh, there are a couple of ways to do a quote here.
In the second row of buttons after you hit "reply", there's one that looks like a sheet of paper with a blue arrow on the right (2nd button from the right, bottom row). You can click on that to get the quotes protocol; just make sure you put what you're quoting in between the two sets of brackets. If you want to quote the entire post, there's a "quote" button in the RH corner of all posts. This will copy the entire post, but you can modify it once it's copied.
Or, you can type the word "quote" in between the SQUARE brackets on your keyboard, then-type-your-quote-here, then close off the quote by typing "/quote" in between another set of SQUARE brackets. It's really simple once you get the hang of it. The backslash ends the process.
Links are another thing....

Chenoeh, I think you had to have seen it in the theater--they seem to have edited it out of the DVD. In the commentary for that scene, Jackson/Walsh/Boyens bring up the internet "rumor" of the car, but coyly claim they can't see it.
As I recall, though, it wasn't that obvious in the first place--all you could see was a gleam of light (sunlight on the windshield) gliding along the hills in the far distance. I don't think I would have noticed it if I hadn't been told exactly where and when to look for it.

This is a cartoon, but it irks me that there is a waterfall in Pocahontas. I believe there are also mountains. I live across the James River from Jamestown and I assure you, there are no waterfalls or mountains to be found. Just swamps and sand.

sumire, you're right. Jackson et al had the car edited out of most of the DVD versions - though I'll have to check my LotR: TFotR DVD. Seeing as how, geek that I am, I bought it moments after it was released, the car might still be on that early of an issue.
Speaking of shackles and movie mistakes: In The Fugitive, Harrison Ford is on a bus in shackles on his way to The Big House. Right before the train wreck, he's still in shackles. But when he jumps off the bus to avoid being hit by the runaway train, his shackles are gone. Am I remembering this right?

Most continuity errors don't bug me, except when they are so glaring.
One that really popped out at me was in The Age of Innocence - Daniel Day-Lewis sees Michelle Pfeiffer sitting on a park bench. He walks up to her, wearing brown suede gloves. Then he sits down and puts his arm across the back of the bench - the shot cuts to MP, and you can clearly see DDL's hand without the glove. Then they cut back to DDL as he pulls his hand back to remove the glove that wasn't there a second ago.
The one that truly irritates me to no end is the Harry Potter scar, because there is simply no excuse for it. It moves all over the place and in many scenes, it just isn't there. Can they flip film like they can the negative of a photo and that's why sometimes it appears on the other side? If not, they need to fire the make-up artist and then have the new one write down "the scar is over the middle of his right eyebrow" and post that all over the make up trailer with pictures of the kid sporting the scar. And that still doesn't excuse why it just isn't there in some scenes. I doubt it is a long, labor-intensive process to draw a friggin' scar on the kid's forehead, so why didn't they make him sit in the make-up chair for 20 extra minutes every day to put it on there?

kostgard, yes, they do indeed flip film back and forth. I know this because I'm a big geek and listened to most of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings commentary He was saying how he wanted the characters to always be moving from left to right across the screen (I think that's correct) on their way to Mordor as a way of showing the audience their continuing journey but Peter said that sometimes they did not film it like that so would "flip" the film after. If you watch the last movie, the Hobbits move from right to left riding their ponies on their way home.
Have to mention the scrape on Frodo's jaw as he and Sam climb Mt. Doom in the last movie. In most of the going up the mountain scenes it's on one side of his face but the film, again, was flipped and in the close up scenes with Sam holding Frodo, the scrape is on the other side. I guess it's not a "mistake" per se as Jackson clearly did it on purpose but it's still distracting.

The Harry Potter scar reminded me of that horrible movie Ransom and Lili Taylor's Incredible Moving Tattoo.
