I just watched Risky Business again. Ahh, 80's slightly-less-crazy cutie Tom Cruise.

I've been cruising through a personal list of Poignant Issues movies from the '80s. Last month it was Clean and Sober, about a recovering cocaine addict played by Michael Keaton, and this month I watched Children of a Lesser God, which is the first "grown up" movie I can remember seeing in a theater. Marlee Matlin is quite excellent in that. Next up: The Accidental Tourist. I think that was my second grown up movie experience ever. Can't wait.

When I broke my ankle this winter, a friend sent me one of my favorite '80s movies, The Man with One Red Shoe, which I have always adored. Mr. S. (who'd never seen it) and I watched it and laaaaughed. So much fun. I think my first R-rated movie was Neighbors, with John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd -- creepy/funny little flick. The next one was Modern Problems, with Chevy Chase. The third was 48 Hours -- my boyfriend and I, both 16, managed to talk our way past the ticket girl, who could obviously tell we weren't old enough to be there. It was supposed to be our first date (and my first date ever), but he jumped the gun and asked me to go see Tootsie with him the night before. Tootsie made a much better first-date movie.

Watched the original Wall Street last night. My viewing was in black and white, since my DVD player inexplicably decided to stop showing anything in color earlier this year. Despite this weirdness, it was enjoyable. Michael Douglas was per.fect. He brought this hypercharged, animalistic quality to the Gordon Gekko character. Even Charlie Sheen was tolerable. The story is very difficult to take, in light of everything that's gone down in corporate America since the '80s, but I liked the ending. One of those rare, non-Hollywood ones, where the protagonist actually has to take responsibility for his actions. And now I'll have to see the sequel, which I'm kind of excited about now.

This probably should go in the TC thread; I collect 80s movies. It is the best to find a treasured one like "All the Right Moves" in the video store's pre-viewed sale rack. My 80s movie love is also why I have hung onto VHS tapes for so long.

Does anyone remember a movie about a teenager in high school who wants to 'win' the girl of his dreams, who is of course, the cheerleader. I REALIZE that this is the premise of a lot of movies but all I remember about this movie I watched on TV was that she had a boyfriend, the protagonist of the movie did somehow win her even though he wasn't an athlete. I remember a sex in the pool scene and him going to Mexico or some other seedy town and possibly cheating on her. Maybe this is a lot of 80s teen movies rolled into one...

I remember the first time I ever saw this movie. I was a freshman at JMU and a friend and I went to our local campus theater (which showed second run movies at discount) took a couple of Busch beers and watched this movie in a packed house. Great time, and great memories!

I just saw Dead Calm again. My kids had never seen it, and they refused to believe me when I said "There's Nicole Kidman." It was so odd seeing her before she became a megastar and the whole Tom Cruise thing happened.
(Oh, and Billy Zane with hair. Let's not forget that.)

I saw Dead Calm in the theater and I remember whispering to my friend that I was with,"Why does Nicole Kidman keep playing Australians?" My friend explained that NK is Australian. Not sure what I'd seen her in that made me think she was American...
