*small voice* Well, she is American, just raised in Australia for most of her life -- like Mel Gibson.
But she was excellent in Dead Calm. I miss the old Kidman, but at least she got away from the crazy!
Speaking of Crazy Tammy, a friend of mine was wanting a list of great 80s fantasy flicks. Legend topped my list, followed by Labyrinth and The Neverending Story. This of course prompted me to start watching my own copies of them.
On another 80s note, reading about these "get the cheerleader" crazy films, I keep seeing "Zapped" show up on my recommended list from NetFlix. Okay, I get it! Clearly Mr. S needs to see a movie with a lot of boobies and telekinesis! (as well as some Chachi & Buddy Limbeck!)

No Way Out from 1987 has been in rotation on HBO for weeks. I freaking love this movie. Young Kevin Costner in uniform! All day! Except when he has his shirt off! Rawrrr!
Will Patton turns on the crazy-zealot eyes better than any preacher. He's magnificent as the political toadie. Someone suggested he was the inspiration for Mr. Smithers to Gene Hackman's Mr. Burns. HA!
Oh, hi, Sean Young, almost didn't see you there with all the yummy men.

I have never liked Kevin Costner myself, however I will say that I love three of his films from the 80's; 1. Silverado, not for Costner--but for Kevin Kline and John Cleese's hilarious cameo. Great film. 2. Field of Dreams, James Earl Jones being snarky is awesome. 3. Bull Durham, uhm...can I be Susan Sarandon in this film when I grow up?

I've had many a fantasy about being in that tub in Bull Durham.

I just saw Less Than Zero again. Pretty bad PSA on the dangers of drug use, saved by a great Robert Downey, Jr. performance and an awesome soundtrack. I can't believe I had a crush on Andrew McCarthy though - he is so wooden and lifeless. And Jami Gertz, while very beautiful, is not much better.
I have not read the Bret Easton Ellis novel it was "based" on, but I understand it's very, very different.

The Big Chill was on a lot this weekend. I'd never really seen it all the way through, and my first impressions of it were along the trite and precious continuum. As I'm aging closer to the characters in the story, I do think they're still kind of annoying, but I'm more charitable about its study of friendship.

There are so many great lines in Bull Durham but one of my favorites is when Annie is fitting Millie with her wedding dress:
"Annie, do you think I deserve to wear white?" "Honey, we all deserve to wear white."
Yes we do!

Ugggh, Andrew McCarthy. I NEVER understood his appeal.

He was nonthreatening. Really nonthreatening.
He was perfect if all you fantasized about was receiving foot rubs.
ETA: Not to say that "threatening" is good. But "nonthreatening" here isn't used in a positive sense either. I don't know what term I could use...

How about "inoffensive"?
