Ugggh, Andrew McCarthy. I NEVER understood his appeal. Same here. I couldn't stand him, especially in St. Elmo's Fire.

Thanks for the suggestion. It works better, but still leaves me with the same problem. If AC is inoffensive, does that make other men who're more traditionally attractive offensive? Maybe Andrew McCarthy just seems nonsexual. YMMV of course. I never thought I'd spend any time trying to define and label this man's attractiveness.

Bland? That's the word that always comes to mind when I think of him.

Ugggh, Andrew McCarthy. I NEVER understood his appeal. Meh. Though I like that he seems to have found a second career playing rich scumbags. It's like casting directors go "We need a rich douche, someone with name recognition....get McCarthy!"

I didn't have really strong feelings about Andrew McCarthy's appeal (or lack of it) either way--Judd Nelson was the Brat Packer who I definitely get the appeal of, the characters he played seemed to need a haircut and an attitude adjustment.

Bland? That's the word that always comes to mind when I think of him. An appropriate term given his character's name in Pretty in Pink. " Blane? That's a major appliance, not a name!"

Ok, I LOVED Andrew McCarthy (and still find him attractive). He seemed like he may be a sensitive guy as opposed to the Alpha males around him. I have an almost Pavloivian response to preppy pale guys with brown hair and blue eyes due to him.

I don't know...to me, his characters in movies have largely been sensitive and very, very bland. Eric Stoltz and John Cusack (even though I dislike him) both had great sensitive characters where the characters were more than not-the-Alpha. I'm looking at his IMDB and my favorite role of his was in that episode of Law & Order: SVU where his veterinarian wife was addicted to ketamine and he kept a Romanian slave in a box under the bed, just because it seemed to me that the twist worked so well *because* of McCarthy's McCarthyness.

PASTE Magazine has done a list of the 80 Best Movies of the 80's. I've seen 66 of them myself, but really, really, really need to watch Amadeus and Raging Bull one of these days.

In my recollection, the best thing about "Raging Bull" was Vicki LaMotta's Playboy layout, timed to coincide with the movie's release. It apparently bugged the crap outta Jake.
"Amadeus", on the other hand, is frikkin' awesome. F. Murray Abraham is amazing in it.
