I love watching holiday movies and TV shows at this time of year. Preferably with a fire going, cats sprawled on the floor in front of it, and some hot chocolate and graham crackers to sweeten the mood.
Some of my favorites are "Miracle on 34th Street" (naturally, the original, in black and white) and I have some Christmas episodes of "Bewitched" on video. I have never actually seen "It's a Wonderful Life." I tried once to watch it on TV, but I just couldn't get into it. So what do other CPMCoGers watch to get into the holiday spirit?
ETA that "Die Hard" and "Die Harder" are two of my favorites. Oddly, I also like to watch "Speed" at this time of year. I got the video for a Christmas gift years and years ago and watching it late at night on Christmas has become something of a Christmas tradition for me.

I begin the holiday season with the Macy's Day Parade on Thanksgiving, and then watch the original "Miracle on 34th Street." I guess there will be a Christmas TV thread at some point but I'll say here that I enjoy the classics: Rudolph, Frosty, Charlie Brown and the Grinch. I also liked the made-for-TV Christmas Carol where Kelsey Grammer was Scrooge.

"A Christmas Story"......"you'll shoot yer eye out!!!!", Darrin McGavin, Ovaltine, that lamp, the Bumpus Hounds.......Christmas perfection. LOVE! I got to see this at the Arclight a couple years ago, on the big screen, with a panel discussion including most of the original cast members. It ROCKED! Plus Scott Farkus is always groovy. I tear up at the Charlie Brown Christmas Special. Linus's "That's what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown" speech gets me right here. I also love Heat Miser and Snow Miser (aka Year Without a Santa Claus), but hate Rudolph and Frosty. Meet Me in St. Louie and Little Women are also standard holiday viewing.

For all you Christmas Story fans, you can make a pilgramage to the actual house.

I'm not the biggest fan of Christmas, so I tend to like the Christmas movies where people have attitudes. Right up at the top are The Ref and Bad Santa. Oh, I howled with laughter the first time I watched Bad Santa. I'm also a big fan of Scrooged with Bill Murray. My Christmas Shame movie? That would be A Diva's Christmas Carol. It's not just because John Taylor is in it, I swear. I just really, really like it.

The Muppet Christmas Carol. I remember seeing it in the theater with my dad and brother when it came out. And ever since then I watch it every year around Christmas. It was the first thing I ever saw Michael Caine in. And Gonzo, my favorite Muppet, is the narrator. I also know the words to all the songs and enjoy annoying friends and relatives by singing along.

It's all about A Christmas Story for my family. We watch the Macy's Parade on Thanksgiving morning, then pop in Christmas Story after football. Of course, we have watched it so many times that even my five year old can quote from it. ("He had YELLOW eyes!") My mom even bought a Peking duck as a surprise menu item one year. Nothin' says holidays to me like watching Flick get his tongue stuck to the flagpole.

Do you know I have never seen A Christmas Story? No one ever believes me, and I thought my husband's family was going to have a stroke when I told them I'd never seen it.
I love White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. It's utterly cheesy but it enthralls me.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Best one of the series, IMHO. We will start decorating Thanksgiving night and pop in my old VHS tape while we put up the tree. I also do not miss the Charlie Brown Christmas, Scrooged, and I always loved Mickey's Christmas Carol when I was a kid, although I have not seen it on the schedule in several years. I love the holidays.
