I, too, watched this tonight. It is silly but effective.
Hmmm, it was exactly one year ago I posted in this thread.

Because they always used to play this every year at Christmas - The Sound of Music. What's not to love? Precocious children, Beautiful European sights, Fiesty Nuns, Hot Austian Captain, Nazis..... Okay, skip the last one, but the rest? All good. Julie Andrews was magnificent and her voice was without compare.
Elf - funny and cute It's A Wonderful Life - Yeah it's a little sugary and goofy, but still awesome. I love Jimmy Stewart. White Christmas - Bing Crosby is the man.
I love Christmas movies and could spend weeks watching one after another.

I love The Hebrew Hammer. Does that count as a holiday movie? Even if it doesn't, Adam Goldberg is hot.
"Shabat shalom, motherfuckers!"

OT: Moldy, you might think about going to see the Sing Along Sound of Music. It's a much better movie when you're surrounded by a bunch of drunk guys in nun outfits hissing at the Baroness.
Topic? Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer always makes me cry. They're so mean to him! He's all "I'm awesome with my little red nose!" and everyone else is all "You freak!" Cue sobs. I AM NOT ASHAMED.
Charlie Brown Christmas always prompts me to buy the pathetic not necessarily best tree on the lot, because it needs more love than the others.

Of course, A Christmas Story is my number one fave holiday movie, hands down. But... has anyone ever seen Emmett Otter's Jug-band Christmas? It's the Muppet version of the story, "The Gift of the Magi".
Man, my youth would be nothing without Jim Henson. ;D

I just saw a commercial for The Nativity Story, starring The Whale Rider's Keisha Castle-Hughes as Mary. I had no idea she had a new project coming out, so I went to the IMDB boards to check out the movie -- mostly because I was amazed that all the principal characters featured in the commercial didn't appear to be white, white, and white (Mel Gibson, I'm looking at your Jesus).
I'm no Christian --raised Buddhist-- so being the blaspheming sort, I found the IMDB boards for this film hilarious (and frightening). I know the boards there are usually ridiculous, but there's all sorts of craziness happening over there about this movie: Castle-Hughes' real-life pregnancy, for instance, and scurilous stereotypes about Islam (did you know that all Muslims are genocidal maniacs?). What's truly amazing to me is the huuuuge fight between Catholics and Protestants about Mary. It's like the Reformation all over again! They're totally at each other's throats about whether or not she was Immaculately Conceived and without sin, and whether or not she was a virgin for the rest of her life. I had no idea that the prospect of the historical Jesus having biological brothers was such a big deal.
In other holiday films, I just saw White Christmas on t.v., and I found myself amazed all over again at that tiny, tiny waist on the other female star that isn't Rosemary Clooney.

I love A Christmas Story. The school the kids go to looks almost exactly like the school I attended when I first saw the movie when I was 8 years old. If I had the balls, I'd buy a replica of the leg lamp used in the movie (they sell these things online!).
Love Actually is right up there too. So many of my favourite actors are in it and it's set in my favourite city in the world. I've never been in London during the winter so it's cool seeing it that way.

I think Moldy should drink until "Lonely Goatherd" sounds like "Wind It Up". Then SoM will rock.
Or imagine my stage reimaging of SoM, where "How Do You Solve A Problem like Maria" will conclude with her walking offstage, followed by LOUD GUNSHOTS! BAM! Maria solved.
I like it but it inspired the big debate between my dad and I (me?). Why is "My Favorite Things" a Christmas carol? There's nothing particularly Christmas-y about whiskers on kittens. But I forgot about the holiday airings. I will have to tell him ASAP.
I thought I was the only person on earth to see the Hebrew Hammer I saw it at a screening because my friend was a friend of Mr. Goldberg. Or something. It made me want to convert to Jewish Blaxploitation. Andy Dick is inspired in it. Wow, I completely forgot that comic genius Judy Greer is in it until now when I checked the IMDB.
I refuse to watch movies with ads. I. Can't. Do. It. I have TiVo and haven't watched a commercial in forever. So this means that I have never, ever ever watched It's a Wonderful Life in its entirety. Plus, I HATE Jimmy Stewart in noble "Jimmy Stewart" mode.
Not movies, but Buffy has some inspired Holiday episodes - watched Halloween on, well, duh. Pangs. And so on and so forth.
I laughed my arse off imagining what the fundies would make of Keisha getting knocked up before The Nativity Story. But that drama sounds not fun. IMDB is full of nutters.
I haven't seen White Christmas, but I love Holiday Inn. And as I mentioned in the "DOH" thread, it inspired the hotel chain, not vice-versa.
The Garland version of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" from Meet Me in St. Louis is bonechilling.
I'll say it now. "Home for Purim Thanksgiving" from For Your Consideration makes it a new holiday classic in the making.

Holy crap, I looked at the IMDb boards of "A Nativity Story," and can you say "creepy"? Everyone is freaking out about KCH being pregnant (my take? Who cares? She won't be the first teen mom in the world, and she won't be the last). But it looks interesting; I'll probably wait for the video, though.
Fave holiday flicks, in no particular order: "The Hebrew Hammer," "A Christmas Story," "Miracle on 34th Street" (I can't help myself), "It's a Wonderful Life," (no, really, I can't help myself), the classic "Rudolph" and "Frosty" cartoons, "Love, Actually," "Bad Santa." And I still have a soft spot for "Home Alone." Oh, and the "Scrooge" with Albert Finney.
I'm such a sap.
