I'll also go for Fred Astaire in anything, but especially the "bullfight" scene in Funny Face, the "coat rack" dance in Royal Wedding, and the "firecracker" one in Holiday Inn.
Adding to the Gene Kelly/Donald O'Connor love: "Moses" from Singin' in the Rain. So entertaining!
Anything to do with Cyd Charisse or Ann Miller (especially in On the Town at the museum).
foxy, the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers song you were looking for is "Lonesome Polecat". I have probably seen that movie 200 times. I refuse to think of it as "obscure", if only to make myself feel better. Oh, Gideon, how I love thee. And soon thereafter Gideon would become Riff in what is still in my top five, the wonderful West Side Story. The scene at The Dance is fantastic. As is the rest of the picture.

"Rich Man's Frug" from Sweet Charity. Bob Fosse, what else can one say?

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is an obscure film? But...but...I love that film!
Actually, it's a guilty pleasure of mine. I love Howard Keel films but I could grab Adam by the shoulders and shake him till his teeth rattled (assuming I could reach - he was a bit tall) for the way he treated Millie in the beginning. I was ever so grateful to Gideon for punching him in the face.
And the Lonesome Polecat dance is beautifully done. Frank was poetry in motion personified.

cyclonevkc , all of the dancing in West Side Story is total joy. Next time you see it, you can find my WTF moment when the Jets are walking away from the basketball court in the very beginning, all just snapping their fingers, when Tony Mordante does a small balletic move then goes back to walking, then Russ Tamblyn does same, then they all start dancing. I think it's just before The Jet Song. I was like "OMG, there's a guy dancing in the street".
Now it's my favorite moment in the film.
Many years later I was working in a costume shop for an Eliot Feld Dance co. I was all "that name sounds familiar". When I found out that he was one of the Jets, I was in ecstasy (in, not on). Yeah, I'm old.

Well put, heavenwithagun! The way you described it, I can hear the exact lilt in the music from that moment. Lovely. All those little things really make WSS special for me... it's not just dance, dialogue, dance, it's little dance movements throughout. By the way, Eliot Feld?? Soooo jealous. I *heart* Baby John!
Pepper67, I don't think it's obscure! Foxy epicurean described it that way, although I don't believe s/he thinks of it like that either. Love me some Pontipee action. That Benjamin's not bad either... how to choose, how to choose?

Ooh, I think Benjamin's gorgeous! Between him and Gideon, it's eye candy galore!
I love the scene where they're kidnapping all the girls and poor Gideon starts meiowing outside his girl's door. Doesn't Benjamin save him from being hit on the head by the lawyer with the shovel? I've really got to watch this film again.
Topic...topic...oh yeah!
I love the waltz scene in The King and I. It's so exuberant! Then the King realises that that's not how they were dancing and slides his hand around her waist...and I melt. I also turn the film off just after that because the ending sucks.

I saw Yul Brenner on his last tour of The King and I. When they came to that scene and he slipped his hand around her waist, the whole theater erupted with cheering. They repeated the waltz scene two or three times before continuing with the play.

The scene where Scott and Fran dance to Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps in Strictly Ballroom makes me melt. In fact, I should be posting this on a romantic/erotic scenes thread because that, my friends, is on-screen chemistry.
The Gosling. The Notebook. The jig. In fact, any jig/highland dancing in any movie just plain rocks. Also see: Willem Dafoe, Boondock Saints.

Pepper and cyclonevkc, I didn't think Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was obscure till I mentioned it to a bunch of coworkers a few years back and got blank looks. Only one of at least a dozen had even heard of it, and the one who did know about it was 30+ years older than me. I'm so glad to find out that other people know it and love it! (My brother got it for me for Christmas last year because he's the best brother evah!)
Topic? Gone with the Wind was my favorite move for about 15 years (mostly because of those dresses!). I love the scene when Rhett scandalizes the crowd by bidding for a dance with Scarlett. It was so great--he knew she hated being left out because she was in mourning for a husband she hadn't even liked, so he found a way to let her dance. She knows she should be scandalized but she doesn't give a fig for what the old biddies think, she just wants to dance. It's not the dancing itself that's so great, it's the chemistry between Gable and Leigh as they banter and flirt. (And, I admit, all those fabulous dresses swirling by in the background.)

The scene where Scott and Fran dance to Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps in Strictly Ballroom makes me melt. Oh yes! And the final dance, when the music is cut off and he slides on his knees and the music is back and... Love it!
