The news that John Travolta is in talks to play J.R. Ewing in the big screen version of Dallas brings back painful memories of his egregious attempts at a Texas accent in Urban Cowboy. My ears are still bleeding.

That was PAINFUL. It's like she practiced that accent by watching Dick Vanxxxx in Mary Poppins over and over.
Bad Southern accents drive me crazy. I'm from Georgia, and it annoys me when people think Southern accents are easy to imitate.
Topic? Nic Cage in whatever movie that was where he was an escaped inmate. If someone did that shitty accent around my family, we'd hand them their ass. The only non-Southern actress I've ever seen do the accent believeably is Tracy Ullman. Then again, she can do pretty much any accent well.

I love Ewan, but I think when he tries an American accent it comes off a wee bit nasally. He's still sexy, though, and I'd STILL prefer to his his bad American accent than someone else's.
His worst though was a fake Dutch accent in Serpent's Kiss. Of course, since his character was an Englishman pretending to be Dutch, maybe that was the point, but it was AWFUL.
