What the hell? 6 seasons waiting for the back-story on Jacob, and it turns out he's just a brain-washed momma's boy who was guilted into being an asshole by his insane, c*%t of a foster mother. Team man-in-black all the way.

Team Man-in-Black indeed. All he wanted was to go back to where he really came from, but nooooooo. Crazy Allison Janney and freakin' Jacob just couldn't leave him be.
And we still don't know his name dammit! Although now that we know he's the male skeleton in the cave I suppose we could start calling him Adam now.

Well I just don't know what to think of that. So...if Smokey inhabits MIB, he can't kill Jacob, but if he's being someone else, he can? I'm glad we got the answer to Adam and Eve though, and I'm particularly glad it wasn't Rose and Bernard. That would have kind of been a bummer.

Well I am confused. MIB never had a name? Why did she love him more? The boys couldn't kill eachother but Jacob threw MIB into the light and as a result he died? WTH is the freaking light? Awesome episode though.

He can't kill Jacob no matter who he's imitating, Ben's the one that killed Jacob. But I'm guessing he can only take the appearance of dead people whose bodies are on the island? Why he chose Locke I'm not sure.

"Every question I answer will simply lead to another question." Think Carlton and Cuse are trying to tell us something?
I'm certainly sympathetic to MIB but I can't be on Team MIB. I get why MIB wants to leave but at the same time he's killed how many innocent people in the name of getting what he wants. He's selfish. That's something that even MIB declared to be bad. He even admitted he was simply using the people to get what he wants. Again, something that MIB said was a bad thing to do. By his admission, he is a bad person.
With all that said, Jacob isn't much better. Even as a kid he was prone to fits of violence and he's about as nutty as dear old mom.
I liked the reveal who Adam and Eve were. I kinda liked they scenes from S1 were intertwined with the new footage. Plus, it was kinda creepy Locke calling them Adam and Eve since "Adam" would eventually take on his form.
That's how I took it. Poor Claudia never gave him a name so Janney never bothered to give him one. Oddly enough, he was her favorite son.

"Every question I answer will simply lead to another question." Think Carlton and Cuse are trying to tell us something? You better believe it! And wow. What an episode. If you want to bring in a psycho-mother who can also appear oddly sympathetic after you just watched her bash a woman's head in, call Allison Janney! So MiB was special and Jacob wasn't. Because he could see dead people? And because he knew things without learning them (like the rules of the game, and that he would be able to leave the island)? While Jacob's only specialness was that he couldn't lie. What the heck is the light, that is also inside all people and can also give rise to the smoke monster? And how did Mother know what happens if you go into the light? Because she did it? Or watched someone else do it? Was she a smoke monster as well as the pre-Jacob guardian? Is that how she wiped out the people's village? How did she do that if she was NOT smokey? She told Jacob that they were the same after he drank from the cup. Obviously she set the ground rules for the game between MiB and Jacob: she made it so they couldn't hurt each other. Did she also lay down other rules that they only discovered later as they tried to kill each other? And what the hell was SHE? I guess my basic question is this: was the monster created at the moment when Jacob sent his brother's body into the light, or did it exist previously? And will the conclusion of the show involve reuniting the monster with the light somehow? If we go by what Smokey has told characters on the show this season, then I guess he was created that day. So Jacob basically brought Smokey to life. Still makes me wonder how Mother wiped out all the people... maybe she just had some other mad psycho-mother-guardian skills? Interesting point: when MiB killed Mother, he used the knife Dogen gave to Sayid to kill Smokey with. And she did not speak to him before he stabbed her. Is that why he could kill her? Or because she had passed her powers to Jacob? I loved the intercut scenes from S1 too: Locke, Kate, Jack. But back then, Jack said the bodies were only 40-50 years old or something... based on the deterioration of the clothes. ( Lostpedia.) LOVED the acting in this episode. Janney, Welliver and Pellegrino (as well as the kids who played the younger versions) just totally brought it. I felt heartbroken for both Jacob and MiB AND Mother. None of them came off as wholly good or wholly evil, just all flawed. Though I guess in the end, MiB inherited Mother's world-view while Jacob remained convinced that people could be good. Interesting that even though it was MiB who killed Mother, and Jacob then sent his brother into the light to a fate worse than death, in the end it seems MiB was the one carrying out the guardian-mission according to Mother's rules. Jacob kept trying to bring people to the island while Smokey tried to kill them and get rid of them (while also trying to gather allies to help him leave). Where is that light now? I'm guessing we'll see it again? ETA: Kristin over at E! thinks that MiB absorbed all the light when he went inside the cave. So Smokey was the light and is now Smokey and what's that mean? He ate all the light? It's gone? Should we all be dead? Or will be if the light/smoke leaves the island?

I wonder if Mother = God and Jacob and MIB represent Jesus and Satan, good and evil. Note that Jacob "took the cup and drank from it", which is straight from the Bible. When Jesus drinks from the cup at the last supper, it symbolizes that he accepts his fate and mission as the Son of God.
This may be a little too deep and spiritual for some, but didn't someone upthread say that one of the writers really wanted to incorporate his beliefs and how important they were to him?
The entire show has been about the power of faith.
I wonder if the light represents humanity, or the human soul, which is "inside all people". It can be inherently good or evil. When MIB went in the light hole and Smokey came out, maybe the evil took over. Now Jacob (good) has to battle the evil to regain the island for the good side. That's why it can't be allowed to leave; the evil will spread all over the world (although some would argue it already has, but that's for philosophy class).
