Battleship is an upcoming 2012 science fiction naval war film based on the game of the same name. The film will be directed by Peter Berg and released by Universal Pictures. Starring in the film are Alexander Skarsgård, Rihanna, Taylor Kitsch, and Liam Neeson. The film was originally planned to be released in 2011, but rescheduled to May 18, 2012.

Plot

At sea, a Naval fleet must protect Earth from extraterrestrial invaders.

Casting

Starring in the film are Taylor Kitsch as Naval commander Alex Hopper, Liam Neeson as Admiral Shane, father of Hopper's fiance, played by Brooklyn Decker, and Alexander Skarsgård announced as his brother. Jeremy Renner had been considered for the role of Hopper, but with conflicting schedules, the actor chose to star in a Paul Thomas Anderson drama filming at roughly the same time. R&B singer Rihanna makes her acting debut in the film. Tadanobu Asano will also have a role in the film.

Production

The estimated $200 million project was to begin filming in Australia's Gold Coast in 2010, but the production company changed locale due to a lack of Australian government tax incentives.

Battleship will be filmed in Baton Rouge and in Hawaii.

This sounds like it has the potential to be really good (Pirates 1) or hilariously bad. I can't decide which direction I'm hoping for.

We were there yesterday! Don't get your hopes up, we didn't see any stars.

Wa are in Oahu on vacation, and went to Pearl Harbor to see the Arizona Memorial. At the next ticket booth, there was a sign to buy tix to go onto to USS Missouri, with several dates crossed out because of "movie filming." Yesterday was one of the available dates, so we went (not expecting any filming to be going on.) We couldn't get up to the top two decks because they were filming up there. And there were crew members all over the ground and ship, and as we were leaving about thirty of them came into the mess hall to get their lunches.

If I would have run into Liam Neeson, I would have just.... I can't even find the words.

I didn't even know they were making a movie based on the "Battleship" game, and then I came on here this morning and see a thread about the movie. Had to add my little bit of almost-seeing-somebody-maybe.

Hey, we've all got bills to pay. And from what I've read, HBO salaries aren't that much.

I know! I should be annoyed that they've cast actual actors for the male roles, but for the big female roles, they went the pop star/swimsuit model route, but it's a movie based on Battleship, so acting is clearly beside the point here.
