I have heard that in emergencies they will open both sides of a highway to traffic going out.

But it's far more visually striking to see the abandoned cars on one side, and the wide lonely road leading into danger on the other. So most likely an "artistic" choice.

Or else the zombie infestation happened so quickly that there wasn't time to open both sides of the highway.

Just watched the first episode on-Demand and screamed into a pillow for the last 5 minutes of the show. When he turned the corner and it was just a mass of zombies, I went berserk. I don't know if I have the stomach to watch the entire season, but it was a really great hour of television.

...Wouldn't it be a lot more economical, in terms of speed and blood loss and finger retention, to just cut off your thumb and slip your hand out of the cuff? Your hand's not that much wider than your wrist, thumbless.

This ep was slow to me. If we've only got three episodes left I'd like to progress a little more, and I'm sure next week will be taken up searching for the redneck. Rick's wife bugs me, and I'm not sure why. She just seems really flat, and I'm not sure if it's the actress or if she's supposed to be lacking in affect.

Also, every post-apocalyptic saga I've ever read has felt the need to go down the "society goes back to the caveman days, women are chattel who wash the underwear and trade sex for protection" road (and usually we encounter a caravan of guys who have a harem of captured sex slaves at some point), so I hope we don't go too far down that road again. I get that the tensions they're showing are realistic, the storyline just makes me weary.

Make the poor dead animals stop!

Heh, I don't think common sense is Merle's strong point. I also think the second and third episodes were a little slow, the third more so than the second.

I assumed that Shane and Rick's wife were having an affair before the zombie outbreak, but since Shane told her Rick was dead, perhaps not.

Also, I wish one of the women had beaten up the abusive husband character (Ed?), but I understand that it was an outlet for Shane's anger, etc..
