Anybody else remember that although Theoni Aldredge was credited as costume designer for the 1974 production, an up-and-coming young menswear designer named Ralph Lauren was responsible for the men's costumes?
Wonder who will do the honors for the new production...

Interesting, divasahm -- the clothing was very well done, indeed. I remember this film, and despite some negative reviews and the casting of Robert Redford as Jay, really enjoyed it.
The original soundtrack is fabulous -- great period music! I used to play this record set (omg!) continuously. Unfortunately, later copies of the movie have discarded a great deal of the music because of copyright expenses.

Good. I was hating this project more by the day. Tobey Maguire as Nick? Oh hell no. Carey Mulligan as Daisy? Against a Gatsby who's 10 years older than her? No. And then...3D? You've gotta be joking.
Hopefully this gets shelved forever and someone else can do an adaptation in another 5 years and actually cast age appropriately and not making it into the jumpy, frenetic mess that you know Luhrman would have.

Wow....that looks...busy, and not very compelling.

I actually think it *looks* perfect. To the point where I can't even focus on the actors. (I hated hated hated Luhrman's 'Romeo & Juliet' until I listened to his DVD commentary - where he and his wife talked about every choice they made in intelligent detail. i.e. - choosing Mexico City to shoot in because it would have a lot of Catholic Iconography like old Verona).
Tobey is technically too old to play Nick, who turns 30 in the course of the book.
This I think is going to be one of those things - the book will never be done 'right' on screen IMO, but maybe an interesting but different interpretation can live on its own. (Like, say, King's Shining versus Kubrick).
I maintain that it may be fatal if Mulligan tries to bring depth to Daisy - the whole point of the book is that she *isn't* the dream that Gatsby sees, she is all surface - but after she communicated so much with maybe 30 words of dialogue in Drive, I'm looking forward to her now.
Catherine Martin - Baz's wife - does the costumes/production design for virtually all his stuff, including this. Did anyone else see their 'La Boheme' on stage? Stunning clothes.

It "looks" beautiful.
I'll probably see it for the costumes and sets. I am curious about the 3D, WHY?

It was actually shot in 3D though rather than postconverted - Hugo did this, as will Prometheus - so why not? At least it is actually composed for 3D. Hugo was magical in 3D even though it wasn't the genre cheesiness that 3D had been used for before.
And I hated, hated hated 3D for the longest time because I couldn't really see it without blur and the picture was so dim. But the newer tech looks good if it is shot from the start in 3D. Hugo made me believe that it will be just another 'tool' in filming. I'm more worried about the Hobbit's frame rate.

It looks extremely Baz Luhrman-esque. It has all of his surrealistic, stylistic elements. One of the YouTube commentators said it was Moulin Rouge on Long Island, which I thought was a perfect description. I think I'll see it. Tobey Maguire sticks out like a sore thumb though, between Leo, Carey Mulligan, and Isla Fischer, he's way outmatched.
