As I understand it, Gaga is a "social drinking smoker" type.
Adele has like a pack a day habit, from what I hear.

Whoa, a pack a day habit? Holy crap. She needs to quit... now.
And yeah. Lady Gaga smokes when out drinking... and sometimes on stage. She has been quoted saying that she enjoys smoking on days she doesn't have to perform (which is never, hah). Who knows how much she really smokes, but she does. Back before she got really famous she sometimes would smoke in the alleyway after her shows with concert goers. I had a friend who had a smoke with her. Hah!

I just will never understand how anyone in my age group smokes, considering we grew up knowing that smoking is bad for you. Is it really just because it looks cool? I'd seriously like to know, as a 29-year-old who's never smoked I have no freaking clue why sucking a toxic chemical cloud into ones lungs and holding it there has any appeal to anyone.

OT: roisin54, Malcolm Gladwell addresses that point in one of his books and what he basically was that most people who smoked were introduced to it by someone they looked up to. If I remember correctly--big if-- his point was that it doesn't matter how often you tell kids that it'll kill their lungs, peer pressure will ultimately win out. /OT
Topic: I think her voice is great, but all her songs sound the same to me. I have her entire album on my iPod, but a lot of times I can't tell which of her songs I'm listening to.

I suppose that makes sense. My parents quit when I was little, and none of my friends smoked. My brother did but I was actively trying to not be like him as a teenager. He was rebel and I was the "good" child.
Topic: I love Rolling in the Deep and Rumor Has It, but all her other songs are kind of boring and repetitive to me.

I think a lot of performers smoke (actors/singers) because off-stage, they're self-conscious and need something to do with their hands. I've been a social smoker and it's been for the same reasons - I don't know; for some reason, when you're just standing around, to be standing around smoking feels a lot less awkward.

I guess what you are really asking is why anyone would start smoking (try it), because you know that once you start that smoking can be very very addictive. It is not like the people want to inhale that stuff, but from co-workers of mine who smoke, it is the first thing they do in the morning and one of the last things they do before they go to bed. My Mother quit cold turkey after about 30 years, but I have one other family member who started smoking in her early thirties and still smokes! (she wanted to lose weight and worked a job at night at a warehouse where all of her coworkers smoked) I have never tried because my mother smoked during all of her pregnancies (I have asthma now in part because of it I think - it was the 60s of course so even her doctors smoked back then) so it has never been anything I have remotely wanted to try. I really enjoyed college because as I remember the majority of my peers there did not smoke. (it was rare to see anyone on campus walking around with a cigarette) I hope Adele can get off of her habit, but you really want to have to kick it. And let's face it she is a celebrity singer who has a lot of responsibilities and is in the spotlight alot (performances interviews etc) and from what I have heard the one thing a cigarette does is calm you down. (of course that is the nicotine). I know none of my close friends nor their spouse or families smoke or really drink so I never smoke and think I had 2 beers total this year. On a side note whenever I go see my pulmonologist for my asthma he always asks me if I smoke. I got a little irritated and said " I already told you I don't smoke 100 times, so why do you keep asking me?" He said, "because smoking is one of the worst things you can do to your body, because it robs the body of oxygen." I have read most smokers don't die of lung cancer but of one of the hundreds of other things cigarettes do to you while you smoke.

It's not just you. I'm a 36 year old and I don't get it. Then again, I grew up in a family of non-smokers (no role models making it seem normal), and have allergies (forget the lung cancer, it is the itchiness that puts me off) so I had more deterrents than others growing up.

Yeah, I get it, because I have friends who chain smoke, but I have never taken it up outside of trying it a couple times in college. I watched both of my grandfathers die of emphysema. It's such a painful and slow way to go, both for the person and the family. I never want to die from a habit that is completely preventable, and something in this day and age we know very much is toxic.
It always shocks me when I find out that a celebrity is a heavy smoker. Their job requires them to take good care of their skin and their bodies, and cigarettes are so unkind to the appearance. Though people do claim that is keeps them skinny. But really? That's just because people tend to switch their addictive behavior to food for a bit while quitting. At least, that's what I have seen.

Even if neither parent smoked, if one grandparent was a smoker a child's risk of having asthma goes up. There is just nothing good about it. I like what I've seen of Adele, but she needs to make some decisions regarding her career and her health.
