I don't realise that anyone thought that was racist - I thought that people thought it was rude. She basically said she didn't want to end up like Halle Berry because her career progression was Oscar to Bond Girl. Rude, and quite quite stupid.

In all fairness, Catwoman sucked horribly...and Halle even admitted it when she accepted her Razzie ;D

Exactly. Charlize publicly apologised for the comment, and sent Halle flowers and a note. Halle accepted the apology, so the issue seems closed. I didn't think her comments were racist at all. More in poor taste than anything.

I don't see at all how that comment could be construed as "racist". Definetly in poor taste, but in no way racist.

Was it something about her being an African American? I seem to remember a flap over that.

The furore over the supposed racist comment was in reference to something Charlize said about the end of apartheid. Paraphrasing, she said that society and order in South Africa really disintegrated with the end of apartheid. From what I understand, that comment was in specific reference to the sexual violence against women that completely exploded in those years. Some people interpreted what she said as a call for a return to apartheid. I honestly don't think that was what she meant at all - the spectre of sexual violence is horrifying in South Africa and there do not seem to be adequate strategies to deal with its origins or prevent its occurrence on that scale. And given Charlize's own history of an abusive father, I can see why that would be so important and frustrating an issue for her. That said, the way she expressed herself was very clumsy and she really did leave her words open to (mis)interpretation.

English is her second language, isn't it? That's amazing. She has no accent at all and never fumbles for words. She must have studied it very, very hard.
I've never watched any of her movies all the way through but I think she's gorgeous. And as for Yossarian's comment that "imagine if it was Gwynnie who's mother had shot her father"-shudder. My God, we'd never, ever hear the end of it. I like that Charlize doesn't drag up her past for sympathy.

Isn't Charlize the one who said she wouldn't do "bad" movies anymore after winning her Oscar...
Hmmm...
Halle: "Monster's Ball" to "Catwoman"
Charlize: "Monster" to "Aeon Flux"
Now, I'm not saying Aeon Flux will be garbage. I'm actually on the fence about that, but I can't remember a woman-in-a-ridiculous-superhero-outfit-in-live-action being really GOOD.
*shrug*
I have no feeling one way or the other about Charlize, but I thought she made that statement.

To be fair to Charlize it was "Monster" to "North Country" to "Aeon Flux" and "Arrested Development." I've heard North Country can come off kinda like a Lifetime movie but that Charlize's performance was amazing.
Halle's trajectory was more like "Monster's Ball" to Bond Girl in "Die Another Die" to "Gothika" to "Catwoman" to O's movie 'o the week. All meh projects at best with meh to cheesy performances from her.
It remains to be seen what "Aeon Flux" will be like but so far I think Charlize is doing a fairly good job of picking her post-Oscar projects. A much better job than Halle Berry is of picking her projects IMO.

I'll never forget the National Enquirer picture of her a few years ago at a Hollywood party sitting cross legged on the ground smoking pot from an apple ! From that moment on I knew her elegant facade was just an act. Good actress though. Really knows how to relax.
