I finally saw it yesterday, it was pretty funny, but I did not think it was as funny as some other people seemed to think it was. Different strokes for different folks and all that. I agree that Melissa McCarthy stole the show. I also loved Jon Hamm, Chris O'Dowd, and the actors that played the Brit brother and sister.

It was really good! I hope to never be a bridesmaid now though.

I never got into Muriel's Wedding.
My sister and I saw this today in a smaller theater and the place was practically sold out. I'm still laughing over the engagement party scenes where the other bridesmaids assume some random man standing near Annie is her husband. And she has to be all, "oh, I don't even know him."
And Annie in first class, "help me, I'm poor."
ETA - Annie saying she'd take "George Glass" to the wedding!

I loved this. My favorite part was everything on the plane, and the butterfly in the invitation.
I really like Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudoph, but Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne stole every scene they were in.

I had mixed feelings about this movie.
I did think it was funny and I thought the movie defied certain generic expectations at certain points, but for some reason I found myself upset that the Kristen Wiig character lost her dignity at the shower. I kept hoping she'd keep it together and then.....she exploded. And for some reason it bothered me. At that point the movie did seem to fall into a certain generic trap that I thought it would avoid.
I really wanted the Kristen Wiig character to keep it together!!! No matter how bad things might be for you, you just don't act like that at ANYBODY's shower, never mind your best friend's! Why, writers, why?
I actually thought it was rather hurtful that the Maya Rudolph character gave the maid of honour position to the Kristen Wiig character and then snatch it away like that (by that time, you've given the commitment and you should most likely honour it), but, still, you just don't act like that at someone's shower! Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy?
Between calling a teenager the c-word in the jewelry store and the temper tantrum at the shower, I was like "uh....ok...I can see why she's not been as successful as she'd like."

Kristen Wiig was one of the two writers of the movie.

I also kind of hated that at the end, she still didn't have a job or an apartment but all was OK because she had a cute boyfriend. REALLY!?

I actually liked that. It was more realistic that she'd be dating someone rather that within a few days she'd a) found a new job and b) moved into an apartment. Dating happens quicker than job and apartment hunting (I speak from experience, it took me 18 months to find a job after I finished grad school and that was before the economy went to hell.)

I also don't think that Annie 'suddenly' went nuts at the bridal shower--she was trying to hold it together, sort of, and her gift of childhood mementos was kind of pathetically inappropriate for the occasion. It was sweet, but it was also kind of possessive (pay attention to me! and only the memories that we share!), although I guess it could also be argued that it was the only thing she could afford.
As far as the dating v. the rest of life, since the movie started out bad for her, it was kind of a nice measure of restraint to have only one nice thing work out, especially since she would need to have a job to get an apartment.
