I would be disappointed if a special category were added; while I acknowledge that a large creative team is responsible for great virtual performances, I still think that Serkis deserves to be nominated as a a regular actor. (I don't like the animated feature film category, either--is a movie good, or isn't it? Who cares if it's animated?)
I intend to see this movie on the strength of Serkis alone--I'm rather weary of multiple reboots and my reaction to the trailer was rather negative.

The problem with nominating a motion capture performance is that the actor's original work isn't seen onscreen. What the Academy voters and the movie theater audiences see is a combination of his work, the 3D modelers, and the animators that bring Caesar, King Kong, or Gollum to life. Serkis could act his ass off in the mo-cap suit but without the acting talent the animator brings to the role (and yes, it is a type of acting), the character does not work. See "Polar Express" for an example of how poorly it can turn out.
This movie's at 80% on RT. I can't wait to see it.

I had no intention of seeing this until I found out Serkis was playing Caesar, and since that was easily the best part of the movie I wasn't disappointed. I was very leery of another Planet of the Apes movie after the suckfest that was the Tim Burton re-make.

Ohmygod, Tim Burton's sucked so hard! I felt sorry for all the actors. I got the feeling that Burton lost interest after the makeup tests. He was the wrongest director possible for that project. Okay, maybe Nora Ephron would've been worse, but not by much. Back in the late 80s/early 90s, James Cameron wanted to do a remake starring Arnold Schwarzenegger but it never panned out. It was going to be truer to the original novel, which would have been awesome.

I have yet to find ONE person who understood the ending and I my friends aren't dopes either. But that movie made. no. sense. I might see this because I adore Serkis and I saw the original Planet of the Apes and I like everybody else was shocked when it ended and we saw they weren't on another planet after all.

I loved this movie. Loved Ceasar. Thought the underlying message was great.

Serkis is doing another performance capture role in Spielberg's upcoming Rin Tin Tin movie (which seems like a silly choice of subject to me, because really, how popular is it to modern moviegoers, but who knows?) It's not Rin Tin Tin, the dog, but Tin Tin[/color]. And his adventure stories are well loved around the world. Though I can't say whether or not it's popular among the younger crowd.

Saw this last night and really enjoyed it. Loved the references to the original - Bright Eyes, Cornelius and "Get your hands off me, you damn dirty ape!"

"Get your hands off me, you damn dirty ape!" The fact that Tom Felton got to say it makes it all the sweeter for me. Who else but Draco Malfoy himself could pull that off without it being completely cheesy.

Yep, my theater--at least the adult part of it--broke out into laughter/applause after that line.
