I just FINALLY watched The Artist and... I didn't like it that much...? To me, it felt like a rather brittle exercise in film making rather than an actual movie. I found myself ticking off film history references in my head as I watched (Greg Toland, Singing In the Rain, German Expressionism, Chaplin, Norma Shearer, ding, ding ding...) and it never gelled as a world onscreen. I never stopped seeing actors act. When a Jack Russell terrier is the most authentic character in your movie, you're in trouble. Worth seeing but I predict it will be studied more than it will be loved. I see your point, though I will say I loved The Artist unabashedly, even though I normally have a strong dislike for things that coast on references. Its mere existence for me was something like realizing a favorite singer made an album you didn't realize existed, or finding something thought to be lost forever. My reaction was mostly emotional and not very critical, but I'm okay with that.

After rewatching the 2009 Star Trek the other day, I renewed my UO that Chris Pine's acting is not bad, and his work in that film is fine and comparable to that of everyone else (including Saldana and ZQ.) I further found his performance to be likeable, especially considering he managed to humanize a character I always found to be a one dimensional jerk.

Wait, people think he was bad in that movie? That's news to me. I thought he did a fine job with Kirk.

I thought he was great as Kirk as well...I didn't think anyone except original fans of Trek hated him (they hate everything regarding the new film). If he was bad, the movie wouldn't have done as well as it did, imo.

People hated Capt Fine as Kirk? That's news to me.
I have no interest in the Hobbit trilogy. None. Not even the hotness that is Richard Armitage can convince me to go.

I just can't with Tolkien, although I know I should at least give it a whirl in a context other than 10th grade English. I have no interest in the films, and just...no. I thought Chris Pine was great as Kirk. He captured a rugged bravado without being a caricature or otherwise hollow.

Here's my unpopular opinion: I thought the Star Trek reboot was bad. Like, okay everyone. Say your tag line. Here's some light orbs. The ship set looks like a Mac store. Great. Whatever. I'm not a Star Trek fan, though I have seen pretty much everything Star Trek.
Oh, here's more ST UO: I like the Wrath of Kahn for camp reasons (it's hilariously bad-ass), but my fav ST movie is the one where they go back in time and save the... dolphins? Whales? I forget. But I used to watch the one when I was a kid, so I have a soft spot for it.
I also just don't care about Tolkien stuff anymore. I get why people love LOTR, but it was just 'alright' for me.

I gave up on LOTR 3/4 of the way through the first movie, during that endlessly boring battle sequence. The only thing I liked about that movie was how pretty Orlando Bloom was with long hair. I can't even imagine how boring The Hobbit movie must be - 3 hours long and it's only the first of 3 installments. The Hobbit is not a long book. I don't care how many appendices from LOTR Peter Jackson added to it, there is not 7-9 hours worth of movie material there.

Hamatron, it's whales. Mr. S. is still reduced to tears of laughter by Kirk's line near the end: "Why don't you take me below deck and show me your whales," or something pretty similar.

Wait, people think he was bad in that movie? That's news to me. I thought he did a fine job with Kirk. Agreed. I thought Pine was awesome as Kirk. Playing such an iconic role could have easily have gone disastrous but he totally pulled it off, capturing the character's leadership qualities, charisma and cockiness. Actually, I think everyone in Star Trek '09 did a great job playing such famous characters.
