I think I saw every Tom Cruise movie up until Born on the 4th of July. I think after Days of Thunder and Cocktail, I was well and truly done. I was a teenager when he was the hotness in All the Right Moves, The Outsiders, Risky Business, Top Gun, etc. At some point I thought, wait a minute, he's playing the same guy in every movie! So my hatred pre-dates any knowledge of Scientology.
My unpopular opinion today is that I might hit the next person who says, "May the 4th be with you" because the Star Wars series has not been good since the very early '80s, people. Let's keep shit in perspective.

I had an "enemy of my enemy" moment the other day at the gym--a person I really don't care for was talking about how much she didn't like Star Wars, and it gave me pause. I wondered if I needed to reconsider my own Star Wars-averse opinion.
Unrelated, Mr Chonies and I were watching bits from The Paper Chase this morning, and I didn't like it because of the stupid smug triumphant face of the upstart law student.

Tom Cruise's screen persona usually plays off of a certain cocky/dickish quality he gives off, so that makes it easy to like his movies while despising him. And Edge of Tomorrow was really good. You lost me with Nick Cage, though. There are a few Nicholas Cage movies I like. I enjoy more as guilty pleasures though- the National Treausure movies, It Could Happen To You, Raising Arizona. That's all I've got though.

Re: Nic Cage. I don't hate his movies probably because I have extreme love for "Valley Girl," which is the first thing I saw him in. However, I would rather watch Fox News while eating an egg salad sandwich* than ever watch "Leaving Las Vegas" again. What a miserable movie. "Let's watch a guy drink himself to death" isn't a premise you'd think would sell.

Let's keep shit in perspective. This is a...thing people are doing? Yikes. As someone who's "opted out" of all Star Wars since the '90s rerelease of Return of the Jedi, that is fingernails-on-a-blackboard bad.

I am a Star Wars geek. Han shot first. Jar Jar sucks. Blah blah blah.
As someone who went to Kent State for a while, today is much heavier.

Not to get all deep and junk, but Kent State rattles me for a lot of reasons (no surprise), and Glenn Frank is one of those reasons--as I'm no longer student-aged, my mind circles around to the faculty and what their thoughts were. Anyway, Nicolas Cage is AMAZING in Valley Girl and then in Italian Valley Girl, aka Moonstruck.

There's so much in that movie. "The slicer chewed off my hand" and "it's Johnnie Cammareri!" in Aunt Rita's voice have gotten a lot of mileage between me and my sisters.

"Some day you'll see this is for the best." "Some day you'll drop dead and I'll come to your funeral in a red dress." Man, now I'm gonna need to watch this again asap.
