What a completely idiotic thing for her to say. She deserved the dragging that she got.
Viola was gorgeous last night and she had a really beautiful acceptance speech. Looking forward to S2 of HTGAWM.

Ten years later Whoopi had to weigh in on how SHE disagrees with Viola's speech: linkWhat Whoopi and others do not understand is that before Kerry, what other mainstream network show had a black lead drama actress? That's what the opportunity thing means. While there have been several supporting black actresses, I cannot think of a single lead in my lifetime, and I'm 40.

It's not like Kerry was the first black woman since Diahann Carroll in the '70s to be nominated for best actress at the Emmys. There have been tons of opportunities... Oh, wait...

And the fact that Kerry Washington is the only one she could come up with as an example, instead of being able to throw out 6 or 10 or 30 names means what?

I do not understand Whoopi Goldberg. Her One Woman Show back in the early days of HBO was one of the best I'd ever seen- it was funny and thoughtful and poignant and smart. I want that Whoopi back. Fontaine visiting the Anne Frank House was amazing.

Whoopi has been out of touch with reality for years now. I just don't get the world she thinks she lives in.
And don't drag Kerry Washington into this, Whoopi. Kerry is more than happy to talk about how black women don't get cast in certain roles and how hard it is to land gigs in Hollywood/on television. I'm sure she's team Viola. Anyone with eyes plus TV and film knowledge should be. Saying that Hollywood and the TV industry is pretty freakin' white shouldn't be controversial. The evidence is right there in plain site.
