On one hand I hate the societal expectation on women to always smile and look happy but in the other DAMN GIRL CHEER THE EFF UP you're on a red carpet.

I can't even with her or her sister. Both are extremely overrated in my opinion; that applies to looks and talent. As for Rooney, sooooo over her. Why she even went the Hollywood route is beyond me, oh wait probably for fame because if she just wanted to act she could do that a local theater. It's not like she needs the money.
I'm not a fan of telling people especially women to smile. But she always looks so dour and miserable. I just don't get it. She carries on as if everything sucks.

Lugubrious. Rooney Mara is lugubrious.
She is also a Edward Gorrey drawing come to life.

Well to me, it's not that RM needs to smile or even look particularly happy, but I find her OTT sad look just as much of an affectation as a big fakey smile. When I ask myself "Would I judge a man for doing this?" the answer is a resounding yes.

Yeah that is what is irritating. It comes off as fake and trying too hard.

She's always said she's a very introverted person, and even though that's something celebrities tend to say, I think it's true of her. But even introverts can smile for photographs.
Before she went goth for GWTDT her red carpet appearances were normal and natural. She didn't stand there stiff as a board looking like she wanted to kill herself.

As a super introvert myself, I totally agree. The whole "the camera is stealing my soul" shtick got tiresome quite a while ago. It's frustrating because I've enjoyed her and thought she's done a good job in the movies I've seen her in.

Lugubrious. Rooney Mara is lugubrious. She is also a Edward Gorrey drawing come to life. I would also call her haughty. She gives off a snobby, I'm-above-it-all vibe (Yet, she shows up every single time. You ain't fooling me, missy, you want the gold).

If she's that shy, then she could easily skip the whole red carpet altogether and just go straight into the auditorium. She and her family have plenty of dough, so it's not like she's beholden to a designer and forced to show off whatever she's wearing.

With a movie like Carol, being photographed or interviewed on the red carpet helps for publicity, probably more than just sitting at a table or in an auditorium as a nominee who'll be shown for 5 seconds before losing.
And as a naturally pale woman myself, I don't think that aspect of her appearance should be criticized.
