Was Hunger overrun with minority actors? Because based on the trailers for Shame - which was filmed and set in New York - it looks pretty devoid of minority actors except for one black woman playing one of the Fassbender character's many conquests. I doubt Kerry Washington and Halle Berry were fighting it out to get that role.
And I haven't seen Shame yet, but it looks like the story could have been about a black brother and sister, but McQueen cast the two whitest actors alive.
If he's going to be so huffy about it, then he should practice what he preaches.

He wrote Shame with Fassbender in mind based on working together on hunger. I haven't seen Humger but given that it's based on the story of Bobby Sands & other IRA prisoners I'm going to guess its a pretty white cast. I think in Shame, other than Fassbender & Mulligan the only other 2 main roles are his male boss and female secretary who he attempts to have a relationship with. The secretary is played by Nicole Beharie who is black. I don't know if race was an issue in casting her or if they just wanted the best actress for the role.
Mcqueen's next movie (also starring Fassbender) is 12 years a slave so that should have a much more diverse cast. Chiwetel Ejiofor is the lead.

I have made no secret of my Fassy love (and I'll talk about it more if you want!), but I have zero doubt that there are equally talented black actors out there I've never heard of. On the other hand, I'd like to give McQueen the benefit of the doubt and assume that it's harder to sell movies with black actors and maybe he didn't have that...freedom, if you will, in casting when he was lesser known? I would like to think that's it.

I've only seen naked screencaps of him in other stuff. But yes. I just think those comparisons make me think I'll also care about the film for artistic reasons too. ETA: Red Band Trailer is Red Band Trailer. No nudity by Fassy but DAMN.
