Ugh, I am visiting my beloved city, but don't get in until the next day. I expect a full Fassbinder full-frontal report, though.

I had a cyber ticket in my hand (well, in my cart) and AFI's stupid computers froze and I lost it. Now I'll have to take off work and wait in the rush line next Weds, but I am determined to see this a month before anyone else Hunter... please send good vibes my way!

I saw Shame at San Sebastian film festival. It is a hard film to watch. But Fassbender is amazing. And the full frontal does not disappoint.

May you have the best of luck getting tickets, Martini Girl. I tried to grab them for the We Need to Talk About Kevin screening on the 10th but was denied as its in standby/will-call only. And, if you do not, may you have the same experience I had at AFI a few years back -- denied at getting into the Single Man premiere/screening, my friend somehow got us into a Q & A with Colin Firth himself at the Landmark a few weeks later. So you shall have your Fassbender, one way or another! ETA: It's playing at LACMA tomorrow if you're a member of Film Indepedent, LACMA Film Club or the NYT Film Club.

I wasn't a member, but I still got into tonight's screening!!!! (I'm still trying for Wednesday night's premiere, but I'm not holding my breath. Cursory thoughts (cause it's late and I'm tired). Brilliant performance by our guy. The first five minutes are for pure shock value. Fassy walks around nude in his apartment (and you see him pee). The camera is at crotch level and it's a rather close shot. AND WOW. It does not disappoint. Carey Mulligan also does full frontal (in the shower via a mirror). There isn't a lot of dialogue in the first 20 minutes or so, and it was fascinating to just watch Fassy's face as he conveyed every emotion. Although the nudity continues throughout the film, it isn't until the end that I felt the film got its NC17 rating. In a tense 10 minute sequence, Fassy goes to a gay sex club (but you don't actually see anything), then there's the three way complete with an ass lick.... and I thought, 'yep, that'll do it". As for those screen shots someone posted a while back (and the ones that got me interested in the film.... they aren't in the movie, so I don't know if cuts were made, or if they're from another film.) But believe me-- you see plenty of Fassy. You see all of Fassy. Upclose. For extended periods. Especially in the first five minutes. It's not a feel good film by any means, but it's not as intense as Hunger. If you get a chance, see it. I'm dying to see how Fox Searchlight handles this publicity, and what kind of awards it pulls in. A solid 'A' from me.

Thanks for the review, Martini Girl! I need this in my life.
(Fassy stan and only a little ashamed. In case that wasn't obvious.)

I really want to see this movie as well. I have my fingers crossed that the movie isn't too tough for academy voters abc they recognize Michael's performance. I think he's really coming into his own as an actor.

I have to say I think the most impressive/depressive scene in the film is the 3-way. In one 20-30 second sequence, Michael's face ages 10 years. I have no idea how he did it, but for me, it was jaw-dropping. The range he was forced to go through as an actor was astonishing. It was painful to watch.
There were a lot of older people in the audience Monday night, and they seemed to like the film. I don't know how that will bode for really old/conservative members of the Academy, but if you're going to have a studio behind you, FS is the one (IMO).
I'm seeing it again at the AFI premiere. My friend got tickets!!! I'll let you know if I see Fassy in person.

Oh yeah, Fox Searchlight has rivaled the Weinsteins in recent years for successful Oscar campaigning.
