The "theme" was Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between. Can someone put the theme into terms my plebeian-self can understand? As of right now, I'm thinking they all should have just dressed as a sushi roll inside of a baguette... |

As of right now, I'm thinking they all should have just dressed as a sushi roll inside of a baguette... Avant-garde and slightly futuristic. Everyone should have dressed like Bjork. It's possible to incorporate the theme in subtle ways - with accessories, or a hairdo, something like that. Chastain's whole look is ultra-traditional so it's basically the opposite of the theme. |

That dress says "generic awards show" to me. It's nice, she looks good, but it's not the Met Ball.

Even for an awards show I'd find the dress a bit too saccharine for my tastes.

I think it looks like something Meryl Streep might wear, which is not a bad thing, even though Meryl is 67 years old.
It's not necessarily in Chastain's best interest to try out edgy fashion even for the sake of a theme. She seems to present herself as a serious actress who looks nice in a conservative way and that's probably a good image for her.
