Why can't we all break into song and dance in real life like they do on this show?!?! I heard that. I don't know, I'm not totally hating this (even if it's really cheesy at times). I think it's because I love the original songs and I try to look past McPhee and the storylines. And Dev is pretty. ETA: Found this article interesting. I don't know much about Broadway or the world of Actor's Guilds, etc. but if Eileen didn't have the $$ to do this workshop within the first 2 weeks, they wouldn't even be seeing any of this happen in the first place. Food for thought.

I've only watched bits and pieces of this show and in the middle of last night's episode, I blurted out "Wait, Ellis is STRAIGHT?!" My husband watches it regularly and said "Uhhh, yeahhh, they're trying to make that happen." I don't know if it's the writing, the directing, or the actor but I really thought the character was supposed to be gay and maybe going to pull some sort of "All About Eve" with the male composer.

Ellis is ruining this show for me. Yes. Also, yes. I feel like the actor playing Ellis should be playing the Sam Strickland role. But I also blame the writing/direction for the lack of believability. Someone up-thread mentioned Katherine McPhee's broad shoulders which I'd never noticed, but now can't un-see. Was that a Streep playing Angelica Huston's daughter?

Was that a Streep playing Angelica Huston's daughter? Yes, it was Grace Gummer (daughter of Meryl Streep, sister of Mamie). It bugged me at first because I hadn't noticed the credits, and I thought she looked like Mamie (who's been on Good Wife) but I knew it wasn't her. I agree with the anti-Ellis sentiment. I don't understand why Eileen didn't fire him when he was so presumptuous with appearing and proclaiming "what Eileen means to say", especially after he's shown himself to be a gossip and was clearly eavesdropping on her sit-down with her daughter & ex-husband. And I still keep waiting for him to get it on with a man. Everything about him screams gay, and I can't believe that's unintentional or he's supposed to be just an "effeminate heterosexual" like the old SNL skit. Overall, I like the show, but I thought last night's episode was a mess. It made me glad that the creator, who was credited with writing last night's episode, has been released from the show for season 2. Maybe they'll get a showrunner with a vision that makes sense.

Ellis just makes the show un-enjoyable for me. He's so fucking annoying. God. And it's sooo unrealistic that this little unprofessional twit would still have a job in the first place! If you have a villain, it has to be realistic that they would even be in that environment. These theater pros would still keep him around after all his eavesdropping and ears pressed against every damn door? And how about when he came in after that secret performance and was all "We all need to calm down and breathe." Seriously?? STFU, you nobody!! Yeah, and "straight" my ass.
And they need to do away with the irrelevant storylines. What the hell does Dev's storyline have to do with the theater world?

Ellis drives me bonkers. I think they've been selling the 'straight' storyline since at least the 3rd episode. I agree that he wouldn't have a job, much less a second job right after for all the crap he pulls.
He's obviously up to no good and I'm hoping that it comes to bite him back in the ass and he gets canned for good.
As for Dev, I'm thinking that since he's directly connected with Karen and how his job helps them keep a roof over their heads, blah blah and he's her "rock", maybe that's why they let us know more about his life. Who knows? Maybe it will find its way to theater world?

You would think but apparently NBC wants the show to focus less on the Broadway show stuff and more on the characters personal lives next season. Which seems like the exact opposite of what they should be doing. Seriously does anyone watch the show and think hey, we need more of Julia's kid. Or please give us more insight into Karen and Dev's relationship.

Is it wrong that all I can really remember is that slimy Ellis.
Maybe I'm being naive, but it seems as if he's a straight guy with absolutely no moral compass and will do anything it takes to move up the ladder. That agent he met with, I'm assuming was being implied that he slept with him to get the meeting with Rebecca Duvall (Uma Thurman's new role)?
He is creepy to the core and brava for Angelica's character (I swear, I'm bad at their names, but better at others? LOL) putting him in his place about what it takes to produce. That clown would really have been shut out if he demanded to co-produce a project so aggressively like that.
This show is so odd.
