I've read that Tatum and Soderbergh are working on a musical theater version of MM for Broadway. ETA: Come to think of it, that's what was at Times Square 20 years ago.

Is there enough story for a sequel? I see people already fantasy casting for a sequel . It could be a Step Up type sequel, with all new people and stories. I'm definitely not going to watch Magic Mike for the story... I love Channing Tatum! He really sells that dumb jock with heart thing pretty well. He's awesome in the first Step Up movie, and I was impressed with 21 Jump Street. As long as he sticks to 'soldier' or 'dancer', he's totally fine.

so, does this have a plot at all? Just curious. I'm not really into stripper movies. Not prudish one bit but it doesn't really do anything for me.

This might be a semantic distinction, but I would definitely say it has a story, with some interesting character vignettes. It's character-driven, not plot-driven. I don't find stripping interesting or titillating at all, but I was interested to see how this topic could be turned into a feature-length film.

Oh dear lord. Never mind the head on a pole, I'm squicked out just by the words, "came out dressed as an off-market Mickey."
Obligatory Disturbing Male Stripper story: In the one and only "male revue" I ever went to, there was a kind of talent medley where at one point, one of the guys did a long drum solo while a video montage of his face strobed in the background. In the video, he had the bowler hat and eye makeup from A Clockwork Orange. 'Cause, you know, it's just not a fun ladies' night unless you get your sexy cowboy, sexy firefighter, sexy vampire, and your sexy droog.

I saw this last night with a group of girls, in a sold-out theater that serves alcohol. So much fun. McConaughey was perfect. Alex Pettyfer was ok but I didn't see how the Kid was supposed to be the next big thing. Weren't the other strippers territorial about a new guy coming in and getting more dances?
And wow, that female lead was awful. Olivia Munn is bad enough - I do not get her appeal and she didn't do much in this movie but appear topless once - but Cody Horn was basically the worst acting performance I've seen in a long time.

I think the appeal of "The Kid" was that he would bring in a younger crowd.

Went with my Mum & sister to see this. My mum thought the sister was too homely looking to land Channing. I explained that her Dad is a big studio exec and she said well that explains how she got the job......
Can't stand Alex Pettyfer. Something about Matthew M. rubs me the wrong way as well. I thought Channing was solid though. That's the 2nd of his movies I've seen in theatres this year (the other being 21 Jump St) so he's doing pretty well.

I haven't seen Alex Pettyfer in much, but I have always read stories about him being an asshole, so that might have affected my opinion of him while watching the movie. I didn't find him to be that hot or impressive at all. After seeing the movie, I read on ONTD that he and Channing Tatum did not get along during filming because he (Pettyfer) fancied himself the star and acted like a pompous ass on set. Channing Tatum seems pretty normal and laid back, so I figure this kid must really be a douchebag. Oh and I didn't realize that he's engaged to Riley Keough (Elvis's granddaughter who played the pink-haired, strung out girl with the pig) in real life. And wasn't he engaged to Dianna Agron before her? Hm.
