Also, I think that her lack of neck makes her look bigger than she is. I am of the mindset that the pixie cut is showing off this lack of neck and doing her no favors. I've really over thought that dress... I think what they wanted was for the neckline to elongate her torso but she doesn't have a neck and she does have broad shoulders, so a v neck or sweetheart neck line would have served her much better. The patterning I think was supposed to slimline her but again, the placement of the seams, the additional bulk of fabric played against her shape and size. It bothers me that someone who, whatever her view of her physical self, would wear that dress. It's like the whole idea of using shapes to create illusion is unknown to her. I read on Gawker that her mother is a respected visual artist (a photographer?) and her dad's an artist also, and come on a designer (Yeah, Zac Posen is sort of crappy but still) made this for her. The ideas of balance and proportion are.... I mean, hasn't her mom ever said, I like the composition of this painting and these are the elements that make it work. I don't know her parents' work, though. I'm not body snarking here, and I look like a female version of Kevin from the Office, and I'm as fashionable as a bathrobe but she looked really bad and she didn't have to.

I think she wears unflattering clothes on purpose. She's a wealthy, connected woman with plenty of resources at her disposal; if she wanted to wow everyone on the red carpet she certainly could. Instead she shows up in expensive designer clothes designed specifically for her that obviously don't fit. She's making a similar statement when she flaunts her body even though she's not the typical rail-thin and rock-hard naked starlet the audience expects.
Part of me kind of admires that she's trying to subvert the culture's current obsession with stars who look impossibly perfect every single minute. I worry, however, that she'll end up like Janeane Garofalo. Lena seems to be a lot less insecure so I hope not.

IMHO, if she really wanted to be hipster, she should have worn a sharply tailored suit. Nothing like menswear as women's wear to subvert the established gender rules at a glam event like an awards show.

I think she went even bigger by playing outcast/misfit with the unfortunate dress and that LIMP. If she wore a cool suit she might actually look cool - and that's so not the point.
I've been over-thinking it too! I'd have put her in something with a square neckline and a narrow skirt. Green, red.. anything to stop her from always looking so beige. But then she would have to walk normally, and she wouldn't get as much attention.

She's making a similar statement when she flaunts her body even though she's not the typical rail-thin and rock-hard naked starlet the audience expects. I agree with this. I will also add that part of why she gets so much naked onscreen is to get over her own hangups and insecurities about her looks and yet she's insecure enough to not share the nude corner with the other co-stars because Hannah gets to be naked the most during Girls. Shoshanna was fully naked during her drug fueled scene with Ray chasing her, but don't remember much of the other girls. Now even Lena's onscreen nudity is way overdone and gratuitous so I am not advocating more of it from the others. Far from it. I haven't seen the first episode of S2 yet but I've read that Hannah got herself a black boyfriend this season. That is precisely why I never agreed with the criticism levelled at her regarding the lack of diversity. This casting feels disingenous to me and we'll see how long the character will last. People who have diversity in mind will think of the characters as they write the story not as a way to respond to the criticism after the show has gone mainstream. Happy Endings is a good example of this.

Man, this woman annoys me. I've never seen her show, but every time I see her or hear about her it's in relation to some try-hard hipster thing she's doing. I think I'd better watch at least one episode of this show so I can criticize her from a more educated standpoint.

I was annoyed with the first scene in the new episode. I don't think I'm giving anything away, and maybe this should be in the episode thread, but she and the new guy are having sex and they both say something along the line of "It's about time." Which doesn't seem to fit the scene and almost sounded like they were talking about a real black person being on the show. Whatevs.
As for the nudity, I guess the other girls have clauses. Alison Williams stays pretty covered up, to.

I guess it's pretty cynical of me, but the first scene kinda bugged me too, it felt like they were basically saying, "Oh, we didn't have any black people? Well look at this, Hannah is having sex with a black man!" And obviously there has been no character development for this guy whatsoever, so at this point it feels kinda exploitative. But hopefully they will flesh him out a bit in the episodes to come. However I'm sure he will be thrown away quickly as soon as Hannah gets back with Adam. I'm not trying to be overly critical here, I'm actually a fan of the show, but it did rub me the wrong way.

I kind of agree with this. And it makes me roll my eyes hard.
