I did too, but then I saw the look on his face after introducing himself to Watty Wyatt and I realized that was the only reason that he did it.

I suppose it would strike most actors do relay that expression -- whether they'd actually be able to execute is a different story, though.

I was really happy to see JJ on this show - I think that he's quite good and I've been hoping for him to transition successfully outside of soaps.

Hayden is kicking ass on this show. I loved that scene with her mom at the gate, her face as she walked away breaking into tears and then becoming resolute, was perfect. Honestly, I don't get the Connie Britton hype. She's perfectly capable but I expected a more dynamic performance because I saw so much excitement about her before the show started. I do not like Juliette's voice. It's going to be painful to hear more singing from her. I am glad that her boyfriend came through for her though. I don't get the Connie Britton love either. I'm sure she was awesome on FNL which I never saw but on this show she is just competent. I find Rayna really unsympathetic. I think her father is right, she is selfish. And I know her character is supposed to be flawed but I don't like her even a little. I wish they had gotten an actress with a better singing voice too. I like Scarlett's singing voice but her speaking voice is really grating. Her whole character kind of bugs. The whole wide eyed naïf thing is tiresome. I hope Juliette gets involved with either Gunnar or Avery and starts stirring up some shit.

I find it very little girlish and meek. I can appreciate it from a demo/songwriter POV and not making her the "star" singer. My money is on them going that route and just showing how things are from that part of the biz and end up giving the songs out to someone else to sing (like Rayna).

I did too, but then I saw the look on his face after introducing himself to Watty Wyatt and I realized that was the only reason that he did it. Eh...I don't blame him. I'm sure the entertainment business is made on connections. I won't dislike the Avery character unless he actively sabotages his girlfriend's career. Regarding the voices, I actually think the Scarlett character has the best singing voice, although the character doesn't intrigue me. She has a good grasp of pitch (although I'm sure everyone is tweaked with Autotune) and her timbre is more pleasing to me than Hayden Panettiere. Having said that, Panettiere's voice is solid--she has previous singing experience, yes? Her pitch is good and in the scene where she recorded the song she wrote with Deacon, she showed good breath control and smoothness. That leaves Connie Britton, who is the poorest singer on the show. That duet she did with Deacon at the Blue Bird was so Autotuned, it was one step away from Lil Wayne. Her voice had that compressed, tinny sound that is an instant giveaway. It doesn't make sense that the show's pilot claimed Juliette Barnes was the poorer singer, because that's not true. The second episode seemed to take the character in a different direction--talented but creatively stifled. I'm wondering how they'll address the difference in upcoming episodes.

Country music is not my thing but that Undermine song is stuck in my brain!
And the way the characters talk? The whole show is one big ole country song.

This was funny. Vulture's "Guide to the Indistinguishable Men of 'Nashville'" (Your link was broken--the article is here.) After reading the comments--whoaaaa, I can't quite recall "Chip" Esten beyond his name, but it blows my mind that someone from Whose Line Is It, Anyway? is playing a male romantic lead on a network drama. What's next, Tony Slattery as the latest sexy doctor on Grey's Anatomy? I don't have trouble distinguishing most of the main male characters, but there's an older guy around Rayna (not her father) that I've been confusing with Juliette's manager.

I really didn't like last night's episode. The editing was extremely choppy and the cut-to each character lasted for less than 3 minutes at times. It was like a really, really bad soap.
Plus, there wasn't any real music in this episode either.
